sharp stabbing pain in lung/chest while running

I am doing field hockey this year and in practice we have to do a little more than a mile run. I have had this really bad pain before but today it was the worst in a while. It doesn't happen until about 5+ min into it (I am really slow and it takes me a little less than 9 mins to complete it). It feels like someone or something is stabbing me in the chest from the middle to the right side right where my ribs end. It is so painful it feels better to just hold my breath. The deeper I take a breath the worse the pain is. It seems to only be a problem whe I am running...I have been trying to get in shape for field hockey and lax since the beginning of June. It has happened since I started but not all the time and no where near this bad. I have looked and looked and couldn't find anything that matched. Anyone know what this might be? I am 15 and currently taking Zyrtec and Flonase if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Aww...you don't have to assume! Just suggest! Don't worry I have responded to others posts and I have been wrong but maybe that little hint would help them find out what the problem was.

i was going to say maybe it is pleurisy, i would do some internet research on that or goto *****.com ... see if you think you have the symptoms and either way i would goto a doctor if you can to be safe.

I used to get similar pains too while running when I was younger... then the pain traveled up to my shoulder blades... (don't want to scare you)-> When I was 24, my right lung spontaneously collapsed one day for no reason after that pain. Doctors still don't understand what causes this.. Get a chest xray right away.

I looked up pleurisy and I have just about all of the symptoms I think this is what it might be. I am going to the pulmonologist in october is that okay or shoudl I go to the doctor sooner. I think I could wait because it is not everytime I run but when I does happen it is almost debilitating! Thanks again!

a specialist is good, but hon- if you think you have pleurisy you should see a doc sooner,i mostly say that because if its caused by infection you need antibiotics, also there could be complications if there is an issue an its not treated. if you live in the usa look up a local "patient first" you can go in one of those anytime without an appointment, get good care for rather cheap. feel better soon, rest up!
