| Coughing up green/bloody phlegm, but no fever. Help?
Last night while in the shower I coughed up what seemed to be blood. Not very much, but still, it was there. Then later on that night, while at work, I began coughing up small amounts of chunky greenish/yellow phlegm with flecks of blood in it. Today the phlegm is still green, but so far I've not seen any blood. The strange thing is that I have no fever or cough. Any suggestions on what this could be? I do smoke, but I'm not sure this could be related. I AM going to quit due to this though. It's scared me into quitting. Should I maybe go to the doctor and get checked out?

Do you have any sinus issues? I have had this happen before thinking it was coming from my lungs but it is actually post nasal drip.

I have something very similar....
It started about 4 days ago, I woke up and coughed the usual junk out of my throat (I tend to sleep with my mouth open), and took a shower as I always did, but when I got out and "hacked" some phlegm into the sink I noticed it had very dark blood in it. So I assumed it was from my sinus (I blew my nose right away and there was blood in it), so I went till the next day and had no blood. For the past 2 days I have coughed up brighter blood, the same way as before, when I got out of the shower. However it only happend to me once a day, in the morning after my shower. I noticed you mentioned somthing about it happening in the shower, I wonder if they are somehow related?
So I went to the Doctor today and had blood work done, TB Test and had x-rays taken. The Doctor took a quick peak at my x-rays and said that she could see a small area of "haziness" in my lung. She said it was only visible from the front, not the side. So I asked her if she thought I had a tumor/mass and she replied "Absolutely Not", she thought maybe it was an infection or the start of pneumonia. So I don't go back till next Saturday but I will let you know what they think.
Hope it stops for you... Cause I know it scares the hell out of me. |

I had my 15 yr old daughter in the emergency room last weekend for coughing up blood. Her doctor recommended going for a chest xray to rule out pneumonia because of the blood. He said most likely it was coming from her sinuses.... Lo and behold he was right. Bad case of bronchitis and blood from her sinuses going down the back of her throat.
Good luck to you both on getting some answers.

Spent the last night in emergency with similar symptoms and diagnosis. I'm coughing up dark red phlegm on a semi-regular basis, for the last 12 hours. I have no fever, and not really any other symptoms other than a little bit of tightness in my chest. And strangest of all to me, no fever. Aren't you supposed to have a fever if you get an infection? The chest x-rays revealled something, but they don't no what. So they are guessing that I have pneumonia, though my white blood cell count seems to contradict this. Hope one of us here's back soon, cuz it sounds like we've got the same thing.

I have the same thing also, but it has been going on for about 1-2 months. Green thick phlegm, some blood if I hack hard enough, no fever. I used to get bronchitus when I was in grade school, but have not since I'm 33. What is it?

I too have been experiencing the same thing. Bloody phlegm in the mornings and also when I blow my nose. The blood does not show up unless I try hard to hark the phlegm up. My family is steeped with simus problems. But I have never heard any of them complain of blood. I don't want to scare any of them by telling them my story though. Could this be sinus related?

About a year ago was I had a bronchitis infection. Was given antibiotics but the cough did not go away. It only got worse. A few nights ago I woke up about 4:30 in the morning coughing. I ultimately coughed up something solid, then proceeded to cough up a great amount of blood/phlegm which was followed by nose bleeding. Called 911, was taken to emergency room. Was ultimately told about a spot being seen on my lungs and referred to a lung specialist. I have an appointment next week. If anyone of you have found out more about your condition, please respond. I'm trying not to be nervous, but I've always thought that the lungs were nothing to disregard.

I have had several sinus infections for the past two years. The headaches in the morning are unbelievable and I've coughed up anything from crusty plegm, brown phlegm, green phlegm, to bloody phlegm. I don't know if the sinus infections and post nasal drip could have caused some of the things they've spotted in my lungs, but I hope to find out today when I visit the pulmonary specialist.

Anyone have an update?
I have similar complaints of blood tinged phlegm when I cough in the morning. I have though been battling sinus issues and nasal allergies the last month or so. It always seems to be mostly present in the morning. I am going to see an ENT this week.

i was recently diagnoses with blastomycosis. Are you from the great lakes region, by chance? (more prominent here). Some of the same symptoms apply.

Update:
Since last entry things seem to have gotten worse. Started seeing a lung specialist who performed a broncoscopy and found a benign tumor in the air passage of my right lung. Quess this was beyond her expertise, so she refered me to a pulmonologist at Emory Clinic of Atlanta, Ga. Had first visit with the new doc about 2 weeks ago but have yet to see him again. See not only do I have this problem with my lungs, I also have no health insurance. So first I have to establish how I am going to pay for all my medical bills. In the mean time, the coughing has gotten nearly unbarable, I have constant pain and heaviness in my chest, and I get short-winded so easily. I was taking prescribed Hydrocodone for the cough, but all it really does is put me to sleep and the nurse told me that was the strongest thing they could prescribe me. I try not to worry, but it's hard when the doctors standing in front of you look worried. I try hard not to worry but the thing is, I have two sons {seven and eleven} who just lost their father to a car accident a little over 6 months ago. I believe their worried they may also loose me. Does anyone understand where I am coming from, cause I don't feel that my friends and family actually do.
