Strange Chest Pains Infection or Not

About two months ago i was on a short cycle ride and going up-hill i had to slow down due to a sharp pain in my chest and the back of my throat. The obvious thing i thought was a heart problem of some sort. I stopped and felt my pulse although it was fairly fast that was probably due to the excertion. My breathing was normal, i was not out of breath any more than usual and a couple of minutes later the pain completely went. I thought about it little in the next few days and i then realised i had some white spots blisters in the back of my throat and felt what i thought was a lump. I experienced a few more episodes of this pain but not just during excerise but also at rest. I went to see my Dr and she said that it was probably a viral infection and that if the pain continued on a regular basis i should go back to her to be sent to see a specialist. She listened to my heart and lungs and did not find anything to worry her. The pain continued and while on a trip to Belgium i went to see another Dr who also said that it was probably an infection although he thought it was bacterial and gave me a course of Amoxycilin. Five days into the course i started to feel a lot better. I also stopped smoking for the first time in 29 years. And don't even fancy a smoke which i found strange. The pains are nowhere near as bad as they were but i am still getting them if i drink a few glasses of alchohol or eat a really big meal. I also seem to get them sometimes while excersising but the strange thing is that the pain goes after a while and i continue with no further problem. In fact i deliberately went on a cycle ride yesterday and did an amazing 28 miles with no pain whatsoever. Its now six weeks since i stopped smoking and the pain comes and goes when it feels like it. It's very worrying although i keep telling myself that its unlikely to be a serious heart or lung problem with the excersising i have been doing. Does anyone think this may be stress related or could be part of an underlying problem other than an infection. One other thing I don't seem to have a sex drive at the moment .. maybe that's also a side effect of the illness.

Re: Strange Chest Pains Infection or Not

Its now two and half months since i started getting the pains in my throat and chest and they are still coming and going. I have good and bad days. The back of my throat still has sores/blisters although i wonder if this is a side effect of either nicotine replacement therapy or stopping smoking. I can still sometimes go out on the bike and not feel much pain and other times i ache in my chest then it completely goes and i'm fine. I intend to go back to the doctors again.

I wonder if anyone else has had these sort of symptoms.

I still have no cough and am not bringing up any mucus or anything. I feel no pain when i breath deaply or sneeze and cough.

It would be nice if someone could reply to my situation its so frustrating and makes me very anxious and worried.

Any ideas as to what might be cuasing this would be appreciated.

Congrats on your decision to stop smoking!! Your lungs will gradually improve if you continue on your track.
Did your doctor dx you? Pleurisy? Constralcondritis? If your antibotics helped and improved your conditon, it was probably nothing to worry about? Have you or did you use any NSAID's anti-inflammatory pain relievers while you were having your sharp pains? Do you drink a lot of caffeine?
I wouldn't think that your pains would have anything to do with your sex drive though. You might want to explore this concern further. Good luck to you.

Re: Strange Chest Pains Infection or Not

Thanks for the reply. I went back to the doctors today. She was concerned that i was still not well and examined my throat and thought that i have a continuing infection. She has put me on another course of antibiotics to see if the infection will clear up. Also gave me a course of Omeprazole (Acid Reflux Treatment) to see if it was a gastric problem. She has also contacted the hospital for me to do excertion tests. The pain is not as bad as it was but is still getting me down a bit. I am still not smoking which is the most positive thing to come out of all this. I don't even fancy a smoke. I am going to continue to try to excercise on a daily basis even if its not as much as i would like to do.

I'll let you know how it all goes
    Thanks

Well got back from the hospital today. Had the ECG at rest was told that was fine. Had an examination from cardiologist at rest all ok. Then had the treadmill test. Results abnormal although she would not go into details she has recomended an angiogram in a couple of weeks time. It does not look to promising.

Re: Strange Chest Pains Infection or Not

Well i had an Heart Cath done and yep i have some blockage near one of my arteries. The doctors say it can be controlled with meds and the cardiologist says that i do not need angioplasty at this stage. Its a bit depressing but at least i have found out what was causing the pain.
Hopefully the meds will sort out my problems and allow me a reasonably normal life now. I have continued on the path of not smoking and becuase of my diagnosis i am now eating a lot healthier foods. Cut out Dairy products and eat more fruit and veg and less meat.
