pain in chest and upper back

I have had pneumonia since January. I've had 4 chest X-rays and the final diagnosis was C.O.P.D- chronic emphysema. My family doctor is sending me to see a respirologist because I am having pain in my chest and upper back and it's been going on for several weeks now. I don't know what to do to relieve the pain I'm having while waiting to see the specialist. I'm still waiting for a date to see him. What can I do about the pain in my chest and back in the meantime. It hurts to breath and to move. I am NOT a smoker and haven't been for 35 years. I DID have croup every winter when I was a kid though. Would that have anything to do with what I have been diagnosed with now?

Re: pain in chest and upper back

I have been suffering from COPD for 7 years now and recently been diagnosed with bronchiectasis. I often have stabbing pains in the chest and pain in my upper back and particularly in my shoulder blades. I have not had much understanding from my doctor or lung specialist. I believe the pain is from coughing and small muscles in the rib cage are damaged. Ironically the chest pain always goes hand in hand when I have green discharge from my lungs. I average this every 3 to 4 months. The pain is excrutiating. I rely on pain killers to help with the pain. I think you may have bronchiectasis from scarring on the lungs from croup when you were a child. My lung specialist said that I got bronchiectasis from having bronchitis as a child as it would have scarred my lungs. Yesterday I discovered on the net that there is a bug than can enter your lungs when your immune system is compromised called microbacterium avium complex (MAC) and can take 18 months of drug treatment to cure it. Some people can't be cured. I am following up on that because I have not been able to get rid of my lung infection with normal anti biotics as it keeps coming back when I get run down. I suggest you speak to your specialist about everything I have mentioned. Good Luck
