    Chronic Cough

I had this chronic cough. It will be a year in November. And my birthday is in November. I want my cough gone by then. Its when I am up and moving around I cough hard. I also cough clear liquid from acid reflux. My mom thinks it is my thyroid. But funny thing is when I am relaxed I do not cough. I went to my PCP. Then a Lung Doctor. Then an ENT. Then a Gastrologist. And they found nothing. But my Gastrologist put a camera down my throat and found a High Hyrnia. But not the cause. But I tried Halls Cough Drop and Vitamin C Drops now. My coughs are loud and hurt mine and my families ears. I also been on all types of meds. But no results in my illness. Please help me. If you know a home remedy that will not kill me I'll try it. If you can think of any medicine for me to try I'll do it. I am willing to try anything to get rid of this annoying cough. I even tried colored water. Nothing worked. So please help me you all. Like I said. My cough is gone when I am relaxed. But I am relaxed in my bed. So please advise me on how to cure it. Thank you.

    From,
    Justin..............

    Re: Chronic Cough

The main causes of a chronic dry cough are:

    -asthma
    -allergies
    -Post Nasal Drip (PND)
    -acid reflux

If you are having acid reflux issues, you may need to get another GI opinion. You can have a normal Endoscopy and still have acid reflux problems. Acid refluxing can irritate the lungs and/or the throat. You can try searching LPR on the boards here for more information on the acid irritation of the throat.

24 hr. pH testing can confirm if you have acid coming up. A Modified Barium Swallow and Esophagram can also show refluxing.

    Re: Chronic Cough

I too have been suffering with a chronic cough for a number of years, first it was happening during the day & when I rolled onto my left side at night, had all sorts of test and nothing came back as causing the problem, the specialist mentioned Acid reflux but skiped over this as I was on medication for this, over the years it became worse & started getting it as soon as I laid down, propped myself up and didn't get the cough, now get it even when propped up. Husband became very annoying always complaining when I started coughing. A coughing fit can go on for up to 30 minutes straight. Eventually through my own research found out about the 24 hrs acid test and this showed I have Severe gastic reflux, but the Endoscope preformed same day showed normal. Now having surgery at end of month, so hoping this will correct the problem (my surgeon is very experienced in last 16 years he has preformed over 4000 of these operations. He also said that due to the coughing my Larynx has become hypersensitive (going into a cold room will trigger a coughing fit), he said once the cause it fixed, there is then some medication he can put me on which will correct the hypersensitivity of the larynx and within 6 mth I should be completely cured of the coughing fits.
