Well, to recap I am photosensitive, have a + ana 1:320, joint pain, fatigue, butterfly rash when in the sun, morning stiffness, painful hands when exposed to cold-fingernails turn blue, and my Dr was giving me a 2nd round of tests. After me having to call the office everyday for a week to get the results, all he would tell me is that my "lupus test" came back negative (I'm assuming it was the anti dna?) and that I have an "extremely ugly case of rheumatoid arthritis". I was told to continue on with my naprosyn (sp?) because my insurance refused to cover the Celebrex and in cases of extreme pain I would be given a cortisone shot. When I asked the DR which antigens were causing the + ana, he said everything was negative except for the ana....wouldnt I have some kind of antigen that would show up in the bloodwork? Also, is Lupus genetic? My cousin has discoid lupus. I am just really confused here. I am contacting a Rheumatologist tomorrow--it just doesnt seem to me like this Dr knows what he is talking about.

Re: Frustrated!

Hi Heather,

I think that what your doctor is talking about is the Anti-dna test- which can indicate Lupus yes. BUT you have a positive ANA which is also an indicator of Lupus too! If you have an ANA that is positive, lots of times the Anti-dna isn't. There are some people that have both positive, but usually its one or the other. I am really glad that you are going to check out a Rheumatologist. With your symptoms and blood work, it sounds like Lupus to me! And dont listen to that doctor, a positive ANA is indicative enough of Lupus activity. Get a hold of your blood work before you go to the Rheumy, and also make a list of symptoms too. I hope that you can get diagnosed quick! This doesn't sound like Rheumatoid Arthritis, but maybe you have both? Who knows! With autoimmune diseases you can have one or many.. since the body is really fighting itself! Take care okay? And your GP doesn't seem to understand thats all
