    Lupus and Anorexia

I hope someone out can identify with my case. My siter in law has been in the hospital for a week now with a rapid heart beat, she lost 30 pounds, can't walk and has been like this for the past 5 months but did not want to go to a hospital because she is anorexic and was loosing wait like she always wanted.

Now the doctors are saying that she has Lupus. Her kidneys are failing, her heart, her lungs, her mind.

Nobody in her family has a history of Lupus and she was not under medication at all.

Can malnutrition or anorexia be a possible cause???

    Re: Lupus and Anorexia

    Dear hmc,

Many lupus patients lose weight during flares. So it could be that the apparent anorexia is "effect", not "cause".

The experts we read seem to agree that the causes of lupus are some mix of genetic and environmental factors. Maybe one day someone will define all the possibilities precisely... If that ever happens, I bet it would be a pretty complex model.

Anyway, the main thing is how your friend is faring. I hope excellent rheumatologists and whatever other specialists are involved can help her fast. I send you both my best wishes & prayers.

    Sincerely, Vee

    Question Re: Lupus and Anorexia

Thank you so much for taking the time.

She has been anorexic for a couple of years now. But within the last year it got worst whereby she would not eat for days just to loose 5 pounds. And would only eat protein food ( atkins).

It all strated 5 months ago with her lymph nodes swollen and flu like sympthoms, high fever at night, very tired and her stomach was very bloated. The doctor thought it was Mono, but she never went back to the Doc.

Within a month she was so tired that she had a hard time walking, her lungs sounded like she had bronshitis, but she refused to go to the doctor. ( and we couldn't make her go unless we could prove she was mentally ill).

Within 3 months she lost 25 pounds ( she is 5'2'' and was 107). We knew she was sick, and could not be Mono, but she was happy she was sinny and pretended to be ok, although she could hardly walk...

The the hair strated to come off, she looked grey, her face was so skinny she looked dead. She could not eat because she would vomit. If she walked her heart woudl go 1,000 miles an hour. Finally we got a court order and were able to take her to the emergency room last week against her will.

After a week of testing, the doctors told her that it was Lupus.

That is why I was wondering if Atkins or malnutrition might have been the factor here?

    Thanks and God Bless

    HMC

    Re: Lupus and Anorexia

    Dear hmc,

I know I've read that Atkin's protein-only diet can affect kidneys in some people. Some people actually strive for that state (there's a name for it, which I can't recall right now) where the body's metabolism kicks into very high gear, which is scary to me, anyway. If, separately, she had lupus & it was starting to affect her kidneys, that really could be something like a "perfect storm". People with kidney lupus are typically put on very LOW protein diets, to spare their kidneys.

Plus, her previous weight & height, as you just cited, are really frightening.

Wow. I can really see why a court order was sought, as tough as that is to decide to do---and to get. I hope the intervention proves to be the thing that helps her get turned around. Good luck to her, you & all involved! Give a holler anytime you need some electronic company, OK?

    Sincerely, Vee

    Re: Lupus and Anorexia

    oh wow.

when this flare started, i, too lost a lot of weight. it seemed to melt off my bones.
    i went from a burley 168 pounds (5'3) to 98 pounds.
i didnt even know i was flaring. i, like her, couldnt eat without vomiting. it was awful. before long..the flare kicked hard. now, i am walking around at a good 113 pounds. but eating is still difficult. gastro docs say i may have vasculitis of small intestine. makes it uncomfortable to eat.

her mind set is bad. i feel for her. when you long for something for a long time, you feel like, hey, i got it now..dont fix me. she needs to start therapy.
it is sad. did they check her thyroid out? i dont know if her eating habits trigggered anything. most of my life i was anorexic and bullemic. but i dont think that was what started this whole spiral..

good luck. i hope it all turns out ok.
    love,
    ali
