What does avascular necrosis feel like?

Hi again.

Between lupus, fibro, arthritis, obesity, APS, and more, it's often difficult to tell what a pain is from, and there's a tendency to write it off no matter how intense it is.

However, I am having horrible burning pain in both the top ridge of my hips and where my leg bone inserts to my hip. It refers all around the area, including my lower back, buttocks, and lower abdomen. The actual areas of the main pain and intense burning are sooooo tender to the touch, and laying on them is impossible.

I've not had hip x-rays in quite some time, but I go to a charity hospital, so it's not always easy to get tests, so I have to pick and choose my battles.

Do these symptoms sound like avascular necrosis? And is this a battle I should pick and ask for hip x-rays? Or is this merely muscular and something that again nothing can really be done for?

Big questions, I know... but I'm hurting... and it helps just to know you guys know sometimes.

Re: What does avascular necrosis feel like?

I am not really sure whether your symptoms are related to AVN or not. For me personally, when I first started feeling the symptoms of AVN I had a sharp diffuse pain in the upper part of my leg that made walking very painful. This gradually improved until it was just a dull pain that was always there when I walked, I never experienced much pain when lying down or anything nearly as acute as you are describing.

Personally I would reccomend at least seeing a doctor if possible to see what they think, if it is Avascular Necrosis you want to deal with it as soon as possible or your options will quickly become more limited as the damage progresses.

Re: What does avascular necrosis feel like?

Do they ache? Are the swollen and tender? If so maybe bursistis? I have bad hip pain as well but no burning. It feels like my bones are rubbing together. I've been trying to research it but haven't asked my PM doc yet. Look these diseases up maybe the sysmptoms will tell you what you have? sacroiliac joint dysfunction, thoracolumbar junction syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis? (I read that this can cause hip pain), ankylosing sponylitis, paget's disease of bone. Good luck!
