Do I have MS, Lupus, what?

I know it's something auto immune related.

    Here are my problems...

All started about 4 yrs ago.

    Iritis
    styes
    fatigue
    cold hands and feet
itchy hands and feet...tops and bottoms
stiff fingers when i bend them
something that feels like shin splints but around my ankles
    hands and feet tingle
achiness in the upper back...like a flu
    headaches
    nausea
    constipation
    abnormal periods
    vertigo
hives ONE time in the sun
    insomnia

All of these happened off and on...

But what happens about once a month...are these 3 specific things...

achiness in the back, headache, fatigue and nausea.

Not related to period...nothing triggers it.

Docs don't know what it is? I have been checked for thyroid(but not for f3-4 or antibodies!!)...that was ok. Had a cat scan...ok...blood drawn...nothing.

What doc do I need to see? A specialist? HELP! I KNOW it's something....I'm not crazy.

    I'm 34.

    Hello Abby32,

I am not a Dr. and I will not attempt to tell you what might be wrong. There are far too many possibilities and I don't know anywhere near enough. I will tell you that you can test OK for thyroid and still have the problem as you can with lupus. In an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the body attacks the thyroid. Your TSH will come back within normal range but your thyroid can actually be underactive.

The same is true of some of the subsets of Lupus. All the tests will come back normal until you are in a bad flare or you just stumble across the right Dr. Don't give up. If you are convinced that something is wrong, it probably is. Don't let the Dr.s tell you that otherwise. Persist. Good luck to you. Hope you find your answers soon.

Hi Abbey32, I agree that your symptoms sound possibly thyroid related. Even if your results are in the normal range, they may not be optimal for you. I suggest getting the Free T3, Free T4 and thyroid antibody tests done in addition to the TSH, T3, and T4. The thyroid board at this site is great. Once you get your results, you could post them there for opinions.

Good luck. Don't give up, you will find out what is wrong.

Re: Do I have MS, Lupus, what?

Hi, Abbey. Have you had complete physicals during this 4-year time frame? Do you have, or can you get, copies of the blood results? You could look for anything with abnormal or near-abnormal results, and also determine what specialized tests have been done so far.

I agree with the others, that based on what you write, it IS hard to fathom where to start. Plus, we're not doctors here, we're just patients. That said,

    * For more info on LUPUS, there's (a) a "sticky post" at the top of the Board called "Answers to Lupus Test Results". It cites a resource that can help you understand the results of what has been done, and to determine what lupus-related tests have NOT been done. Also (b) several other "stickies" containing both the classification criteria for lupus, and for antiphospholipid syndrome, which is a blood clotting disorder seen in many lupus patients.

    * Is ANEMIA a possibility?

    * Maybe consider a GI PROBLEM? Have you seen a gastroenterologist?

    * Maybe consider FIBROMYALGIA, which falls short of lupus but can cause a nasty array of problems like fatigue, pain, GI problems, etc.? A rheumatologist could investigate this condition, as well as lupus & some of its close cousins.

    * SKIN: When you say you had HIVES after being in the sun, can you describe what those looked like, where they appeared, how widespread, how long they lasted, etc? Also, do you sunbathe, or use tanning salons? Do you feel any different now after sun exposure than you used to feel?

I hope you post more when you can. Meanwhile, best wishes! Know that we at least can understand your frustration & concern, many of us having been very puzzled about ourselves along the way... Sincerely, Vee

Re: Do I have MS, Lupus, what?

No on the anemia....was tested for that a few times.

I've been to the doc too many times to count....so I wouldn't even know where to begin with obtaining the blood test results....as I have seen a few different doctors....emergency rooms included. Have not seen a gastro. doc. Nobody wants to refer me!!! They keep telling me it's nothing.

As far as the hives, they were red blotches....not raised...very itchy...all over where the sun hit. It only happened that one time. I've been out in the sun and tanning salons since and was fine. Besides getting a sunburn.

I have also had the red, itchy little bumps on the tops of my feet a few times...as well as on my lower back...above the butt. I have also broke out in those same type of hives when I wore a pair of undies I just bought. And that was rare....because I was never allergic to anything in my life.

Re: Do I have MS, Lupus, what?

    Hi Abbey32,

I can sympathize with you. I had many of your symptoms for years only to be told that nothing was wrong with me. The constipation was one of the worst symptoms during that time. Even now, with things seeming to be on an even keel, I must be very careful to eat the right foods with plenty of fiber.

Perhaps, if you have not already tried this, you could keep a journal and try to track what you did and ate on the days you felt better as opposed to the days you felt worse. In this way perhaps you could narrow the field as to specific stresses, activities or foods that may be triggering some of your symptoms, especially the hives.

As to obtaining copies of tests and results, since you say there have been so many Dr.s and so many tests, instead of going back, begin from now. Whenever you go to a Dr. or an ER request that copies be sent to you or made available for you to pick up so you can have them on hand should you need to see another Dr. This way any new physician you see will have a reference point to start from. Don't get overwhelmed with this though. If you get many at one time it can become daunting. I put all of mine in a large 3 ring binder and organize them by the date they were done. I don't much care which Dr. took them, only the results in a time line.

I hope some of this has been helpful. Good luck to you. I pray you will get some answers soon.
