Re: ANA positive and now hypothyroid....Lupus?
Les, Hello. I'm just a patient, obviously. From what we read of SLE, it can cause a huge variety of problems, but only certain very specific ones support the Dx of lupus. Those criteria are in a "sticky post" ( = permanent info post) at the top of the thread list. You'll see that you generally have to meet at least 4 of the 11 criteria listed, at some point (not necessarily all at once), to be Dx'ed with the *systemic* form of lupus. As I understand it, hemolytic anemia & positive ANA both fulfill separate criteria.
That said, I bet there are probably OTHER causes for BOTH your diagnosed conditions---meaning it may be possible to have both but not have lupus. But because SLE can sometimes explain BOTH, it make senses that you ask for further discussion & evaluation (well, to my untrained mind, anyway...)
Also, you could also ask your doctors
(1) if they've done any of the specialized autoantibody blood tests typically done when lupus is a candidate (anti-dsn-DNA, anti-Sm, anti-Ro, anti-La, & many more). While only two appear in the criteria, there are LOTS more possible in lupus.
(2) whether you seem to fulfill any OTHER of the criteria for lupus.
(3) whether Synthyroid (or any other meds you're taking) might explain the pain/cramps you describe.
If, after discussion, etc., lupus still seems to be a possibility---then, in your shoes, I'd ask to see a rheumatologist, as this is the specialist who usually "takes the lead" in diagnosing SLE. I hope something here helps some. Post again when you can, OK? Good luck & best wishes to you, Vee
