    Question does lupus mutate?

hi ... for lack of a better way to put it ... does lupus mutate?
dx in 2006 with SLE but have not have skin involvement ... till now.

my head itches, my hands itch, my feet itch, my legs itch ....i scratch till its raw ... only realize i've been scratching when its raw. my head hurts to touch.
my skin is changing as i have an olive complexion but now i have olive & fair spots ? like depigmentation?
i've only changed my shampoo but after the itching started?
also not on meds, only GP PX of anti inflam & pain meds (low dose)

    Re: does lupus mutate?

Itchy skin is probably inflammation of the skin. I get this when my prednisone level is low and I have a flare. The itch is unbearable. Only thing that helps me temporarily is a hot shower. A high dose of prednisone takes care of it.

I don't know about mutation but lupus inflammation can be anywhere and the skin is the largest organ in the body.

    Re: does lupus mutate?

Angel, I certainly had ever-worsening & ever-broadening problems before I was Dx'ed. Skin rashes came LAST in my long trajectory. Somewhere I read the phrase that lupus is a disease of "protean manifestations", meaning ever-changing symptoms---and it stuck in my mind.

I don't think pain meds and anti-inflammatories alone can disrupt the underlying problem = overactive & aberrant immune system that's turning on your own cellular matter. Do you have your antibody levels tested regularly? Are you careful about limiting sun exposure? Did you ever try any of the DMARD's? If not, maybe it's time to revisit the subject with your drs.?

A long shot---but can the meds you take ever cause itchiness, etc.?

Not trying to be rude... just hoping you can turn things around! Take care, Vee

    okay - change of post!
so basically my body is telling me that mu lupus IS ACTIVE and the rheumy thinks it not.
i need to get to a new doc, have bloodwork done, get to a specialist that can co ordinate the various issues and not look solely to a rheumy - altho one of the more important on the list that will be a long term relationship!
    Action plan!
    Thanks! as always!

    Re: does lupus mutate?

    HI Angel MJ,

I'v been to Dr. Johan Kritzinger at the Garden City Clinic in Johannesburg. I can really reccomend him, its difficult to get an appointment. I was on a waiting list for 6 months before I could get an appointment and had to wait another 2 months before I could see him. It was worth the wait!!! I will forward you his details if you need it. I'v also got the itching and the dipigmentation in my face. Please wear a sunblock, the South African sun can been very harsh to our skin. I try not to leave the house without any sunblock.

Hope you feel better soon !!

    hi inap - thanks!
i had made an appt. with him and got a dec date but had a REAL bad experience with his office staff on the day of making the appt. and could not face the thought of actually dealing with them on a long term basis.
his dad treated my dad for leukemia in 93. SMALL world!
good to see you are back on top again!
