Re: New to the board
Hi Kathryn and welcome. I have SLE too, and suffered for years with gastroparesis, getting so bloated I could hardly breathe or wear a bra. Then I found out I was gluten intolerant and dairy intolerant, and when I eliminated those from my diet, my GI tract started functioning again. I used to take Reglan, a peristalsis stimulator, which helped some, but the diet has helped more. I would make sure you are not Vit B 12 or folate deficient as well, as lots of SLE patients are, and that can cause a peripheral neuropathy in the gut affecting peristalsis too. I would avoid cold foods, gas producing foods, straws (which add gas via swallowed air) carbonated beverages (add gas) and eat lots of fiber rich foods to keep GI tract moving. Antibiotics are usually used for bacterial overgrowth in GI tract, plus a FODMAP diet to prevent fermentation from bacteria and sugar.
