    Question My Babesiosis test result

I don't have Lyme, but I have had babesiosis for I think a year and a half. I was treated for it last December but I never felt it went away. I finally went back to my dr (who was awful to me and treated me like I was a hypochrondriac and told me he didnt think I had babesiosis at all, he didn't know much about the symptoms). Long story short, my babesiosis results finally came back and they are IGG positive, and IGM negative. It says something about "past exposure" in the writing that followed.

What does IGM negative mean? Is it still positive even if the IGM is not?

    Thanks for any insight

The same tick transmits both lyme and babesiosis. Babesiosis is a co-infection of lyme. You need to see a lyme specialist ASAP. They are called LLMD - lyme literate medical doctors. Do not try to get help from anyone else. You will only end up frustrated and delay your healing. If you tested "positive" then you are positive for LD. But don't worry about the testing as clinical symptoms are looked at first for diagnosis. You will receive a more definitive test through Igenex Lab and also be tested for all the co-infections. Your doctor is representative of most NON-LLMDs. He hasn't a clue! You will be wasting precious time by continuing to see him. Without proper care lyme only becomes more chronic and difficult to treat. Take a look at the stickies at the top of this board for more information about all this.

Wish you the best with finding the help you need. Let us know how it goes.

    Re: My Babesiosis test result

    Thank you so much!

I was not tested for Lyme this time, but last time Lyme was negative (last Dec), it was just the Babesiosis that came back positive, so he didnt bother retesting the Lyme. It would be possible to have just Babesia without Lyme, right?

My concern, in looking up LLMD, is that apparently they don't take insurance I've met my deductible, so everything covered is covered 100%, nothing out of pocket. I can't afford to go someone that won't take insurance. I am not going back to my primary dr though, I need a new one of those. I was thinking of trying some sort of infectious disease drs or something, but I hear it may not be any different than my incompetent primary dr.

Even though IgG was positive, if the IgM was negative, that means it's not a current infection, but an old one, past exposure? I was treated with Quinine and Clindamycin, just not sure yet it will work because I was also treated last Dec (that time was Mepron and a Z-pac)

    Re: My Babesiosis test result

    Hi again,

An ID doc will be no different than going to your primary. They will tell you they treat LD but they haven't a clue! If finances are a factor here are two suggestions:

    1) A good Naturopathic doc who specializes in LD.

    2) Go alternative. It's cheap and effective. I only did alternative and have done very well, especially not having to have years and years of abx in my system to deal with. I had lyme and Babs and a host of other co-infections.

Whether you're positive for IgM or IgG is sort of irrelevant. First, you were not tested at Igenex Lab and most other labs do not know how to test for LD or co-infections. If you tested positive IgG that doesn't mean you do not have an active infection. As I previously stated, LLMDs look first at clinical symptoms. This is because testing for Lyme is so difficult.

    Re: My Babesiosis test result

ok thank you I will look into that. Is there a list of alternative treatments somewhere?

One more question... there was also supposed to be a "smear" ordered but it wasn't on my results (or at least not yet??) unless it's either the IgG or IgM, it's not either of those, is it? Or would that just be assumed to be negative since the IgM was?

IgG positive IgM negative is consistent with PAST infection and not present. Positive means your blood has developed and contains antibodies against the infection you were diagnosed with. This is normal.

If you have negative results and no symptoms why would you get tested for Lyme again? Only if something is bothering you then should you pursue.

    HateticksMA,

When it comes to lyme these values cannot be relied on for accuracy. Many with negative labs do absolutely have lyme. Many with IgG postive and IgM negative do absolutely have lyme. This is why clinical symptoms are the first diagnostic tool, not tests.

I do have symptoms, as I said I told my dr my symptoms and he acted like I was a hypochondriac.
