Question What exactly is Lyme Disease?

I mean, I have read stuff on it, and I am a dumb teenager and don't understand. My boyfriend has it, and I don't understand when he tries to explain it, and he always avoids the subject. Can anyone help me understand it more?

Hi Thoughtless, welcome to the board! You are not dumb for asking questions I think it is wonderful that you want to understand what your boyfriend is going through.

Lyme disease is a multi-system bacterial infection caused from the bite of an infected tick. The Lyme disease bacteria is called Borrellia burgdorferi or Bb. Lyme can cause many seemingly unrelated symptoms because it can affect almost every system of the body. Besides Lyme disease, ticks can transmit several co-infections including Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasama. Many people who have Lyme are co-infected. It is important to be tested for these.

How long has your boyfriend been sick? Is he seeing a Lyme knowledgeable doctor and has he been tested for all the co-infections?

Feel free to ask any questions, we will help if we can. Your boyfriend is lucky to have you on his side.

He has had it since he was little, and he takes these pills for it. I was wondering because this past school year he got no credit because he was gone so much. Is ti really that bad? Or is some of it in his head?

    Hi Thoughtless,

Welcome! Sounds like your boyfriend has "Chronic Lyme" since he has had it since he was little. Chronic Lyme is extremely disabling and it can affect the brain as well as other parts of the body.

Yes, it can be that bad as there are members on this site who are now in Wheelchairs because of Lyme Disease.

I think it's great that you are curious about this disease and maybe you can get your boyfriend to see a LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) as perhaps he is not getting the correct treatment.

I think he should also be tested for Coinfections such as Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Bartonella, Mycoplasma by IgeniX Labs located in Palo Alto, CA.

It would be wonderful if your boyfriend read these posts and joined in.

I wish the best for your boyfriend,
    Denise

Thanks. I might, but he is very touchy about the subject, which I can understand. Another thing, besides worrying about him, I was wondering if we stay together, and eventually have kids, could they get it?

Re: What exactly is Lyme Disease?

Hi Thoughtless. Has your boyfriend been getting treated continuously by a knowledgeable doctor? If you would like a doctor recommendation, post where he is located and I will give you the name of the closest doctor to him that I know of.

If he gets the proper treatment (including being tested for co-infections) he can get better. It can be difficult to go through treatment and it is normal to feel worse before feeling better.

From what I understand, there is no evidence that Lyme is sexually transmitted; however, many Lyme doctors believe it is possible. Lyme can be transmitted through pregnancy.

He is being treated as far as I know. I know he goes to doctors and takes medicine.

    Hey "Thoughtless"

I think the board members are going to give you another name. You are certainly NOT thoughtless if you are here trying to understand your boyfriend's problems. And as Ticker already said, nor are you dumb!

There are LOTS of different kinds of doctors, and some know more about Lyme than others. What Ticker and others have mentioned and what we all are concerned about is that your boyfriend may be receiving treatment for his Lyme disease from a practitioner who either (1) doesn't know much detail about Lyme disease, or (2) maybe knows a little, but hasn't kept up with changing info (do you know this disease wasn't even "discovered" until the late 1970's?? - we know very little about it!). There are docs who have treated MANY Lyme patients and have spent much time studying Lyme disease. Many of these docs have training in specialty areas already such as Rheumatology, Infectious Disease, etc. Some are general practice doctors (like your regular family doc) but have spent so much time working with Lyme patients and studying Lyme that they have become experts in the area. It's very important that your boyfriend is seeing someone who either (a) knows a lot about Lyme and has kept up with the changing views on it, or (b) is an Lyme Disease Specialist.

As you may already know (or will certainly learn later in life!) you can't force anyone (boyfriend, parents, HUSBANDS, etc) to do things you think are right or better. But, you can certainly understand why he may be frustrated with this disease, or may hurt from it, and you can offer support (time to listen to him, this board address, etc). Do you think he'd be interested in participating on the board?

As Ticker mentioned, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) currently says they do not believe Lyme is sexually transmitted (though some experts who treat many Lyme patients believe there is a chance it might be). We just Don't Know. No studies have been done that prove this, but we still know so little about lyme disease. There are medically documented cases, though, of women who have been bitten by ticks and got Lyme disease, then got pregnant and trasmitted it to their babies. These can have very bad outcomes. So, there is certainly a possible future for you and your boyfriend if your relationship goes that way. But, your boyfriend needs to have appropriate treatment.

I read that some school districts in areas where Lyme disease is really frequent have programs to help kids who miss a lot of school due to the disease. This (missing school from being sick) is not uncommon in kids with Lyme.

We're sad your boyfriend has spent so much of his young life with this disease. But, you are very kind to be concerned. He is lucky! Good luck to you both, and keep asking questions and reading.

    Kali
