What kind of specialist diagnoses Lyme Disease?

Can my family doctor order the appropriate tests or do I need to see a specialist?

Does your doctor believe in Lyme Disease? Does he/she know not to be so closed minded and not to trust the test if it comes back negative? I knew when I had gotten bit, knew when I got sick...and was poo-pood for years. Doctors go by test only most of the time. Took me 8 years to find someone to stand up and say hey you have lyme...geezzzzz like I didn't know. If you have the chance of going to a LLMD then it would save you a lot of time and aggrevation and if you have lyme, then you have a faster chance of getting the RIGHT treatment...There are people on here that most likely know of a doctor in your thoughts...
Yes get to a doctor that knows what they are doing witht this diesease...
But also remember even the best testing does not always show a true positive....There are alot of us out there that got tested and showed no sign of it...

    Good Luck!!!
    God Bless....

    Hi Traya,

Geminigirl is right regarding if your doctor is open-minded or not. The majority of doctors have no knowledge about Lyme Disease (I went from doctor to doctor for 5 years before I was diagnosed) and after 10 years I am about 90% cured now.

You can order the test kit from IgeneX Labs yourself (we are not allowed to post websites here), but you will need a doctor's signature for these tests. Once again, it is very important to be tested for the coinfections than I talked about in a different post to you.

Another important factor is that Lyme is really a clinical diagnosis and a "reputable" LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) uses these tests as an aid, not a diagnosis, though personally, I was glad to see that my tests came back positive. Depending if your body is still making antibodies does affect the test results. I had my IgeneX tests done 5 years after I was bit, so my body was creating antibodies from the lyme bacterias.

It is important to see a LLMD and if you tell us where you live, we can give you names of doctors that are close to you.

If you have any more questions, please ask. Lyme is curable when treated!

Hi Traya. (thats a pretty name by the way)

My symptoms were all over my body (fatigue, lightheaded, loss of balance, etc) so I started with my primary doctor. She had no answers so I went to 2 ear doctors, then another general practitioner, then an infectious disease doctor, an ear specialist and finally 2 neurologists.

If you can believe it, none of them thought of Lyme.

By dumb luck, I happen to speak to a woman who had the same symptoms I had and she was treated for Lyme. She referred me to doctor in my area who specializes in treating Lyme patients. Then I finally got treated and got my diagnosis.

If you tell us your state & town, I bet someone here can recommend a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD).

    Good luck!

Most GP's have lyme book knowledge. Make sure your doctor has more than just textbook knowledge. I think that is where the problems start. Doctors are aware of what they read about it (outdated info), but do not spend the necessary time to become familiar with what is now known and the current treatment protocol. I agree, it is best to see a LLMD.
