    Undertreated?

June 30, 2008 I was treated for an unknown infection for 10 days with amoxicillin. I had a fever of 102.5, severe headache and neck pain. I was so sick I thought I had meningitis. My lyme was negative at that time. Never had a rash or known tick bite.

A few days into my treatment I developed Bells Palsy while on vacation in VA.

I went back to the doctor July 21 and my lyme was positive. She treated me with 11 more days of amoxicillin. My Bells Palsy improved 24 hrs after restarting the amox.

I have always questioned if I was inappropriately treated. I questioned the NP on the gap in treatment and not receiving doxy.

I was retested Oct 2009 for numbness and tingling in my arms and legs.

I was in an urgent care center last week and reading a poster on lyme and it said doxy is the only treatment.

I brought it up to my current primary care and she doesn't say much about it.

    My lab results...

    July 2008
    IgM by WB Positive
    IgG by WB Negative
Lyme Abs Tot 2.3 (Range 0-1.2)

    Oct 2009IgM by WB Equiv
    IgG by WB Negative
Lyme Abs Tot 1.25 (Range 0-1.2)

    Thoughts?

    Re: Undertreated?

    Hi,

If you test positive, and your IgM (which indicates a current infection) is positive according to what you posted, then you are positive for lyme. Please read the stickies at the top of this board for info. on the specialist you should be seeing (an LLMD) to receive proper treatment. Your current doc and NP will not be able to help you with this, except give you inaccurate information. There is other info. in the stickies that should be helpful to you as well. After perusing those stickies let us know if you have further questions.

I hope you can get on track with this soon.

    Tess

    Re: Undertreated?

Nurs3kim, definitely you were under treated.

Borrelia (Lyme) has 3 life stages to it. We need an antibiotic for all 3 of those stages.

The symptoms you are having are very common with Lyme and co-infections.

There is a thread above on Lyme Disease Information, it will help in guiding you to find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD). Getting the proper treatment is a must.

You should be checked for co-infections such as Babesia, Bartonella, Mycoplasma and others. Even viral infections such as Epstein Barr, Cytomeglovirus ect ect.

It also helps to be treated for parasites and for heavy metals.

There are many ways of detoxing through treatment. Raising the immune system it a huge thing. It will help put these critters into remisson.

Hope you find your answers soon!

    Jodie

    Re: Undertreated?

I am short drive away from Boston...it looks like Mass General has a Lyme program that I will be checking out.

Thank you for making me think I am not crazy to pursue this =)

    Re: Undertreated?

    Hi,

I second Jodie's post. I doubt hospitals are manned by LLMD's. I hope this is not the case with Bostons Mass General, but I think that usually infectious disease docs and similar specialties handle the treatment, not LLMDs. You might inquire of the treatment used and the physicians speciality. Then you could decide if you want to proceed or look elsewhere. Either way, I hope you find great care and can begin healing.
