blood count normal, 5cm lymph gland in neck.

My son is 20 months old and has had an ongoing cough for about 7 weeks. He developed a swollen gland 18 days ago. He was put on an inhaler for asthma at that time and it did help the cough for a week. He also had one day of very high fever 4 days after the lump appeared. He was tested for strep and mono...negative. His bloodwork all came back normal. No sign of infection.
He was put on heavyduty antibiotics on Sunday(so 2 days ago) to try to combat the "infection/abcess" in his gland. I was told if the swelling doesn't come down in a couple days that a sergeon consult and draining/biopsy will be explored.
His lymph node is 4-5cm across, is bruised and very hard and painful. He is extremely irritable and violent. I'm sure he is in pain and tylenol doesn't help.

I guess besides hearing others peoples similar stories I would really like to know what other tests I should be asking for, and also want to know about white blood cells. Can you have an infection without increased white blood count? Can it be lymphoma if blood count is normal?

Let's start there!
Thankyou.

Just wanted to offer you some encouraging words. It's so hard when your child is sick, especially if you don't know why. I have 2 kids ages 5 and 7.

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, lymph nodes swollen from lymphoma are not typically sore like that. I think he could have an infection or virus that isn't showing up in the bloodwork. Your average round of bloodwork isn't going to show everything.

I really hope your son starts feeling better soon and that it is nothing serious.

Hi zefmom, I hope this is reassuring for you. In most cases, raised lymph glands are not sore in the case of lymphoma. Also it is extremely extremely rare for a child below the age of 5 to have lymphoma. And with his bloods normal is also another excellent sign. Your white blood count is usually excessively high with lymphoma.

I hope that helps. And i hope your son is ok.

xx

hi.
Thankyou for the encouraging words.
Well, I took him for an ultrasound on friday and then was so freaked out I took him to emergency AGAIN on saturday. I just had to have a surgon see him. And I had this overwhelming sense that I wanted the lymphnode OUT of his body.
So after a 7 hour wait...the first surgeon said he would drain the lymphnode. Then we were admitted to the hospital and told we would have the surgery in the morning after some heavy-duty IV antibiotics. So in the morning the specialist surgon came to tell us he decided to remove the whole node PLUS the surounding tissue PLUS all the skin on his neck that was red and purple!

The sergon thought/thinks my son has a disease called atypical mycobacterial lymphadenitis. So on Sunday my son had the surgery.
And the node has been sent off to various palces for testings and such.

What a tremendous relief to finally have that off of my sons body. And it still could be lyphoma but the chances are very small.

After I told the surgon it took me 7 doctors to get to this point! He told me my moma instincts were right and even though this was an advanced infection it could have gotten a lot worse.

It just goes to show that if you think and feel something is wrong you should really push to have all the tests done to get an accurate diagnosis.

I'm so glad you got it sorted! And i know how frustrating it is. Our instincts are usually right. We know when theres something wrong with our bodies. The doctors thought i was making up my pain in my back and after changing doctors and making them do more tests i was diagnosed with lymphoma 9 months later. If i hadn't changed my doctor then who knows what i would be like now. When do you get the results?

I'm not sure when we will get the results back but we see the surgon in the morning for a check-up. I'll keep you informed!

Smiles. Zefmom.
