    Severe peri-menopausal joint pain

Hi folks, I just read a long thread about peri-menopausal joint pain, and I was so happy to find others going through this same hell that I had to register and join in. I have had severe, totally debilitating back/hip/leg/foot pain for 13 years now. I am 51, and the first pain began at 38. That was when my mother started peri-menopause, 38. I have lived in serious pain for 13 years, with horrific "episodes" every four years or so that keep me in bed for months, and sometimes years. I can't sit, walk very well, or stand for long. I have been on medication for years, and am worried about toxicity. I recently went to the ER twice in an ambulance because i could not get up and had to wear depends!!!! This is by far the worst thing to ever happen to me, it feels like I'm dying, or basically dead already, I can't do anything. I've had 3 MRI's and they are clean. Likewise X-rays. Only a little early osteoarthritis, normal for my age. I've seen everyone - doctors, specialists, chiros, naturopaths, rolfers, shiatsu workers, acupuncturists - all to no avail. I'm convinced it's hormones, but when I tried a bio-identical I had almost instant SEVERE pain. I've been a vegan for 16 years, and am considering taking a bone broth supplement and a fish oil supplement. I hope this goes away at some point, understatement of the year. I have suffered SO much for so long, and I don't feel I can keep doing it another 13 years. Ugh. Any commiseration or suggestions is welcome! Love to all of you!!! xoxoxoxo

Joint pain is fairly common as our ovarian hormones plummet but this is definitely severe. Have you been checked for rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases? Have your periods stopped and, if so, how long ago?

Hi StLouisegal! Thank you for your response, yes I've been checked for other reasons - autoimmune diseases, thyroid levels, had all my blood work done, checked for tumors, etc - I'm clean and supposedly very healthy! My periods stopped in December last year - so I'm approaching that one year anniversary. I (and all of my health care practitioners) are mystified, which is why the hormone thing makes so much sense, especially since my mom had her first hot flashes, etc at 38, the same year my back went out the first time. she has also had back issues all along, unfortunately they haven't gone away entirely for her - not as severe as mine though, I'm just praying I can find some relief soon. I went ahead and ordered the bone broth/collagen supplement and the fish oil. I think the drop in estrogen and the thinning of cartilage may be part of my problem, I will definitely update this feed with my results.

It's odd that your trial of (bio-identical) hormones caused SEVERE pain. Do you mean joint pain or other type of pain?

I took it once - an estrogen and progesterone blend - and an hour or so later my sacro illiac joint wrenched in that horrible way that it does every four years or so - I can't describe it except that it is like someone is pulling your tendons out of your body, it totally fractures my lower back and crumples me to the ground. Definitely in my sacro illiac joint. It didn't go completely out when I took the hormones, but there was a definite threat and warning. So I stopped immediately, but then I thought maybe it was a coincidence, maybe I was paranoid - I mean how could it affect me that quickly? So I tried it again, and the same thing happened.

    Re: Severe peri-menopausal joint pain

I have the same severe problem with you and I am only 31...I have almost every symptom of peri ( hot flashes or chills, bile reflux, itching, fibromyalgia, CFS, allergies, IBS etc) but I still have regural periods but lighter...on 3 and 4 day I am spotting and after my period I have intense pains on my legs hips bones ( especialy when the weather is humid) until my ovulation. Then I am fine for a week and then my PMS nightmare starts. It is unbearable...
My thyroid is always normal, I am going to run an antinuclear test again but I am sure that I will have normal results. I am going to crazy...

I was recently diagnosed with intestenial cystitis ( no microbe in my urine). I believe that it is due to the hormonal imbalance on my body.

It is a torture , my life has been ruined...I cannot go for work, I cannot even do my daily simple activities

Last week, my endocrinologist prescribed me a multivitamin supplement in an trial effort to alleviate my symptoms, but I am not so optimistic about the effectiveness of the vitamins as the underlying cause is the hormones.

p.s I search everywhere for help but nothing unti now ...
    Maria

    Re: Severe peri-menopausal joint pain

I am so sorry Maraki for your pain - I can totally relate. It is utterly life-changing isn't it? I still have no real answers for myself or for you - except to keep trying everything, all the supplements, vitamins, and try eating an anti-inflammatory diet - no meat, dairy, gluten, sugar - this has helped me a lot, and yesterday I started the bone broth - this morning I feel ok - not sure if it's related though. I will keep going and updating my results. I also found that meditation has really, really helped with my depression and anxiety around not being able to work, travel, or really do anything. I've had 13 years of being seriously limited and in pain, and it's been a horrible learning curve. I'm still learning how to deal with it and I still get depressed. But meditation really helps you accept the part that just IS - and it helps deal with the pain. My best to you Maraki! Let us know anything you find that works, and I will do the same.
