i break out in hives!

Has anyone ever heard of breaking out in hives as a menopausal sympton? My Dr. doesn't think it's related, but I DO! For the first time last month I had a period that lasted 2 weeks and on the second day I broke out in hives and have had break outs now for a month! I also for the first time had HOT FLASHES and NIGHT SWEATS...so Ithink I/m in the beginning of my menopause and the hives are related. I have never had them before. Am I alone????

That's how I was when I first began my hot flashes. It was horrible. I thought I had something very wrong with me, and since my brother also died young around that time, I really thought I had something wrong with me. It eventually passed. It will with you too, but get them checked out, doesn't hurt.

Re: i break out in hives!

Your not alone, I too breakout with hives during my monthly. Started eighteen years ago after the birth of my first child. My Dr. told me that it was nothing unusual to happen to a woman. I believe it has to do with a hormonal imbalance. My Dr. wanted me to get a hysto..... but I refused. I'm trying birth control and herbal remeties. Hopefully it works , I'll let you know. Re: i break out in hives!

Thank you for making my Friday the 13th a great day!! I had a feeling it was a hormone imbalance. Doc says we may never know what causes one's hives. I go back to Doc Monday and will tell him what I learned from "experts." Have a wonderful weekend.

Re: i break out in hives!

It Friday!! Yeah!! Okay, so I'm a little late on the post, but I feel like I have a little experience with this thing. (Or maybe I've just brainwashed myself into believing I do). I had hives as a child and remember them quite well. Then, as an adult, I had a time where I was itching like crazy and couldn't figure out what was going on. Half of my tongue would swell. No doctor could figure it out. I went to an allergy specialist twice and he said it didn't sound like a food allergy. HOWEVER, did they tell me what to do for it? NOOO. I went back to my regular MD and he put me on Zertec. After reading about it, hives can be caused by stress (and I think a lack of B vitamins, too). Our bodies going through menopause, crazy things happen. I woke up this a.m. with a big whelp on the side of my face looking like someone beat me up. Now, I'm putting two and two together and think it is hives again. I've been itching also this week, but no signs of any external whelps (except for my cheek this a.m.) but also heard that whatever you are broken out on the outside, you are broken out more on the inside. So, I think I'll get back on the Zertec and just wait it out. Hives can last 6 months to 2 years from what I have read. The last time I had them, I stayed on the meds for about a year or so. It is just so much easier to take an antihistimine and try not to think about all the crazy changes our bodies are going through. Men are luck in that regard. They don't have to slowly feel like they are losing their mind like we do.

I'm also going to increase my vitamin B and C as that is good for hives from what I have read, also my calcium. Can't hurt for sure. Anything to get through this is good with me!

Re: i break out in hives!

I am getting b12 shots every 2 wks., according to my doc, my red blood cells are not absorbing the b12 (I have enough b12 in my diet.) He didn't mention any relationship between the b12 and hives. (he probably doesn't know!), but I suspected it. I break out BAD the first day of my cycle, and then it subsides some. Moves around, gone in the morning, back at night. I stopped eating fruit and nuts daily to see if it helps. Been two days and I am having some relief. They have been continual for 2 whole months. MISERABLE!, Thanks for your input. It helps to feel relatively normal!
