    Unhappy Menopause & Low Libido

Ok, I don't think I've seen this posted here, so just want to ask what anyone/everyone is doing for this problem. Since I have hit menopause I just don't seem to have much interest in sex. I'm certain it's because of the low hormone levels, but wondering if there is anything that can help?
    Or am I doomed?

Hellas, good question. I'm interested to see if anyone has some sure proven remedies. My doctor put me on Wellbutrin XL to help with my fatigue, but it is also suppose to help with low libido. I've been taking Wellbutrin for over 6 months and noticed improvement, going from NO libido to some, after 30 days. Nothing like what it was like before my estrogen left town, but definite improvement .

Hi Hopefully, Yes I've heard that about Welbutrin. My doc is always trying to push it on me to quit smoking (ya I know bad, bad, BAD). Just hate the thought of A/D's, and all the other side effects they can have. Was hoping for something a little more natural (I'm kind of a vitamin/herb freak), but will certainly consider ALL suggestions.
    Thanks Hopefully.

    Hi Hellas, Hopefully

Strange in all of our prior posting that this one very important thing has not been mentioned! Kind of strange isn't it? Well, I was trying to find something to help me after I started on the Lexapro and started having problems with climaxing, and I of course, got on the net and did some research. Me being a vitamin/herb freak myself, wanted to find something natural too. I actually found articles about Ginkgo Biloba being great for low libedo and SSRI induced sexual problems. So - I of course went out and bought some. I've been take 120 mg twice a day for close to two months now, and it does help, it really does. Plus, it's good for memory (although it hasn't helped mine any), hearing problems, circulation problems, and several other things. A post menpausal friend of mine started taking it too, and she said her sex drive was increasing.

So if I take the Maca & the Ginko, I'll be like 24 again right?
Guess I'll have to check those two out, for more info. Actually I have a book of herbs..so guess I'll start there.
Thanks Debra L & sorry no one around right now for you. I hope you find someone nice, that can deal with all this meno stuff. A guy like that will be a keeper for sure.
And thanks Jackie. given up too much already, so I figure what the heck...might as well have some fun while going thru all this meno stuff.

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

I recently went into menopause in my early 30s, because of pelvic radiation and have been coping with a declining libido. Loss of libido can be contributed to stress, but, generally, it's due to declining levels of testosterone, in women and men. In women, this starts to occur, during and after menopause. I've been on a low dose HRT patch, which helps some, but my gyno. said that I might try the low dose testosterone patch, which comes out in the fall. I'm ambivalent about taking more meds. Some women have tried rubbing testosterone cream, into their skin. From what I've read, antidepressants can lower libido. I've also found a regular excersie routine has helped too, probably because it gives me a general sense of well being and destresses me. With much empathy...

Hellas - true - can't give up on that part, got to have SOME fun! Actually I had always had such a high libedo, I looked forward to my slowing down a bit. Hubby has NO libedo, so that made is really hard on me. But, the Lexapro didn't slow my sex drive down any, although some people it does, it just messed me up on climaxing. The Ginkgo is supposed to help with both tho. Search the net for Ginkgo Biloba and sexual function and see what you come up with. There's lots of info out there and it really does help. You will have to make sure you get the right kind tho. Do you have Sam's there? They have the best kind and very inexpensive too

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

Thanks for sharing this info. I'm going to try this for sure! I just kept thinking I'd lost interest because of being tired all the time, but I really do think it's the hormones (or lack of...) Two questions:
    1) I've also read that Ginko might not be good for those with anxiety (me), possible makes it worse. Any thoughts or experience on that?
    2) We don't have Sam's but have Costco - what's the brand?
    Thanks

    Katikdid,

In everything I have read, I have never seen anything about it causing anxiety. I don't see how it could, there's nothing in it to cause that.

I buy the Sam's brand "Member's Mark", but Costco probably has their own herbal brands too. There are three things that you must look for:

Make sure it says "Standardized" to least 24% Flavone Glycosides and 6% Terpenes. Otherwise, you are wasting your money. Ginkgo is good for all sorts of things besides sexual dysfunction.

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

Hi again. Well I did some searching on Maca last night and found out quite a bit about it. It's actually used quite a lot in south american. It works (supposedly) for both men and women. It's natural, from a plant, and they add it to food, drinks, bake with it etc. The recommend dose on store brands is quite low, according to one source, and you should be getting somewhere aroun 3-5000 mg of it. Powdered version can be added to lots of things. Sounds promising. (Jackie, you may want to get DH to give it a go).
Well maybe I'll do some research on the ginko nect.
Sounds better than drugs, and they say it's flavor is somethin akin to graham. Guess I could tolerate that. Now if I can find the stuff!
    Thanks ladies.

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

Hellas, I am giving him the Ginkgo too, since it has worked well for me, but I really think it's hopeless for him. Between taking an AD, pain medication, smoking, etc - he doesn't have a chance as far as libedo, but at least Levitra makes him useable, ha ha if you know what I mean! (oh, I thought of something funny today - DH could also stand for DUMB husband!!) lol

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

Jackie, He needs to quit smoking first (like me) cause that really does a number on the little veins and all. My BF smokes and well....he ain't what he used to be either.
He thinks it's stress (he should try menopause on for size if he thinks he has stress!!!)
Zinc is also supposed to be good for the little veins, in all your appendages.
Thanks for the laugh again. So ginko really helps huh?
Gonna (maybe) try to quit smoking while I'm away from work for 2 weeks...don't know if I can though. Just know I need to. Cause if smoking doesn't kill me...meno will!

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

I hope neither does! But, I have given up on him quitting smoking. I told him when he dies, I'm going to put a pack in his coffin with him so he'll have em with him! That bad... sigh. Good luck to you, though. Wellbutrin is supposed to help you quit - and it's an AD that could help with mood swings too!

    Re: Menopause & Low Libido

I'm glad to see that someone else is going through this too...I've been at my wits end. My gyn told me that all I need to do was use lubricant...well lubricant doesn't help ifthe desire is gone And believe me...it's gone, totally. My poor hubby...I'm so glad he is patient and understanding. Then add pain to the lack of desire and it just makes it worse...I seriously don't want to be touched, at all *sigh* I've seen some suggest anti-depressants, but last time I was on those I had some serious issues with my TMJ and I don't want to go through that ever again..I'm very reluctant to try drugs.

So ginko really works huh? I was taking an herbal supplement for menopause but it didn't have ginko...maybe I should try some.
