What is going on?

I went to my annual OBGYN appointment today and when the nurse measured my height, I shrunk half an inch!!! Has this happened to you? My doctor's still in denial about my peri-menopause, but I know my body, it has changed... especially my cycle. Today I discovered I shrunk?!?! I thought women are not supposed to shrink until close to our 60s.

Please tell me when or if you'd shrunk yet. I'm only 42!

Thank you.

Could their scale be wrong or the nurse measured you incorrectly?

I'm 46, not shinking, but my Mom did, an inch or so since she was in her
50's. I dont know of anyone that has shrunk at 42, may be an error, I would have it re-checked to be sure. 42 is very young.

Did the Dr say anything about bone loss? I have a friend that osteo. runs in her family and the ladies in her family are as young as 32 when they start having bone problems. You might want to get a bone density test done.

Don't panic. Is it possible you weren't standing up straight? I know that may sound silly, but if you aren't feeling well and you're standing with your shoulders slumped, you may not have even realized.

I would also get a bone density test (I did about a year ago - I'm 47). This will tell you if you already have thinning bones and will give you a baseline to compare to later.

If your Dr. is in denial about perimenopause and won't even consider that some of your issues may be due to that, I'd consider finding another Dr.

Re: What is going on?

Sorry to tell you, but you can start having some compression of your discs in your back as early as your 30's. That's why there is such a big push for even teenage girls to get the required amount of calcium daily. I am 51 and have lost at least 1 inch. There is no family history of osteoporosis. Over time the space between the discs in your back get slightly closer together, from osteo, age or being on your feet for hours at a time working. I guess mine is from age and spending most of my life on my feet. I really think more about my posture lately too. I need to do like mother always said and stand up straight! I wish I could stop shrinking, but I think with age it will still happen alittle more. Not fair, we get shorter as we age and fatter! Ann
