New to Perimenopause

Well...I didn't think I would be writing on this board quite this young, but here I am! I am 39 and my doctor told me I am in perimenopause. I have all the symptoms and labs to back it up.

Here's my question: I am still on birth control pills. How do you know when real menopause has started when you are on the pill???? Do you ever stop bleeding during your period week on the pill? Or does the pill force a period to happen even if you have entered menopause??? I am supposed to start my period yesterday and still have not. Wondering if my body will stop bleeding even on the pill????

Any wisdom would be helpful!!!!

Re: New to Perimenopause

You have alot of good questions, but I don't have the answers. I have been wondering the same things myself. I am 52 and started on the pill 7 months ago for very heavy periods. The pill helped that for several months, this month my period was very heavy again. I have only had minimal spotting mid-cycle once or twice while on the pill. The pill never helped any of my other peri symptoms. I really think if we stay on the pill we will keep pumping out periods every month, that is why I am going to stop this fall and hopefully my periods will fade away naturally. (Probably won't happen). I have had a couple of periods while on the pill that my period started a few days late, this month it started 3 days early. Good luck, hope things go smoothly for you if you choose to quit the pill. Ann

Re: New to Perimenopause

Hi there, I new to menopause as well and I"m 50! I was not put on the pill, , but a low dose estrogren patch and progesterone pills which I'm to take 12 days out of every month to bring on my period during this phase. I'm suffering hot flashes , fatigue and I do still get my period every now and then. Now I haven't had it since the beginning of June. From my understanding we need to bring on our periods so the lining of our uterus doesn't get too thick-which can lead to uterine cancer. The pill decreases the chance of uterine cancer. I would think that you should have a period during that week but maybe not...I would definitely call your doctor with all of these questions or go to a specialist in the field like I had to do because all I every got from my doctor was "yes you are in perimenopause and it's all normal UGH" very frustrating...
good luck
