Proper Cleaning of a Penis

Hey all,

I've been trying to clean my penis religiously lately. However, I'm trying to get an idea of whether you need to use soap or not? Some people say no, as the penis already is cleaning itself with its secretion and what not. Soap will only cause irritation.

So what is a good way to do it? For me, I usually run hot water on the glans and rub soap to the inner foreskin. As for the glans, I let soap run over it, I won't deliberately rub soap over the glans. After I'm done, I just put my foreskin back in place. I don't really dry the area.

For the past two days, I've been quite irritated down there. No redness, just a little uncomfortable every now and then. When I urinate, no pain what so ever.

Also, is it normal to have a "mole like" spot on the tip of the penis. I've had that "mole" for a long time and it hasn't changed. It's not a bump or anything. It kind of like a "discoloration". The spot is very small too. Just a little concern of whether or not its something bad.

proper cleaning is what is proper for you. soap, no soap, whichever works best for you. if you are irritated, try rinsing more thoroughly. leaving a little soap can cause great irritation. if that doesn't do it for you, try no soap, and turn the temperature down a bit. if you still have irritation after that, try applying diaper cream with zinc oxide.
about the mole-like spot, your best bet might be to ask your doctor, or if he/she doesn't know, a dermatologist. dermatologists tend to be much better at things having to do with the skin than urologists.

I wouldn't personally let soap anywhere near it. There's nothing in there that isn't water-soluble, and quick rinse and rub with warm water is all you need.

I find soap irritating, as do several of my friends.

I use shower gel - when showering I pull the foreskin back and rub some lather all over, then rinse thoroughly. I've been doing this as long as I can remember, with no ill-effects. I agree that soap might be a bit harsh though, especially if you don't rinse properly and some particles of soap remain - this could definitely cause irritation.

Each to their own though.

Depending on the soap. Something mild, that doesn't have all the perfume in it will work. I have to assum that some guys were raise by their parents not to use soap/cleanser on their penis. I can't imagine not using a cleanser on my private area. The cleanser/soap kills odor and fight against the germs that form in that area. But I'm here in the US, and I must realize things are different in other parts of the world. If you can keep that area clean only using water, then do what works for you.

I definitely use soap. I don't think you can really get clean without it.

Some intact guys can use soap all their lives with no worries but for others it is the root cause of irritation. Plain water works fine to keep it clean, so it's the safest option.
