Urinary problems ms or female problem

I was diagnosed with ms over 20 years ago. Iím actually doing really well. Iím on aubagio now after testing positive with JC virus.
For the last 6 months or so Iíve been having problems with uribating like every hour and also during the night. Went to neurologist who did new mris which did not show any new lesions.
He referred me to a urologist but canít get into her til April so I had a gyno appt anyway so I spoke with her about problem. She did find I have a fibroid the size of orange in uterus that could possibly be impinging on bladder but she said given that I have ma it might also be that
Has anyone had this urgency and frequency problems and tried any of the meds that they use for it
Itís so hard because I am never sure if problems are ms related or just another cause

    Hi Irishsue,
Boy are you speaking to me right now! Like you, MS for over a decade. Also like you, frequency issues...no leakage and no accidents, just always feeling like I have to pee!

My MRI shows nothing new. My Neuro sent me to a Urologist. The urologist did the standard tests including an Ultrasound of my bladder; I am emptying all the way...talked to me about Kegals to strengthen the pelvic floor..

I took myself to the Gyn, since I consider her my go-to doctor anyway. We discussed my age (entering Menopause) and the fact that as your hormones start going wacky, this can definitely make you have this symptom. She told me that bladder urgency is one of the most frequent symptoms which bring people to her only to find out they are entering menopause. she suggested I see a pelvic floor specialist, who is also a therapist Why not?

Off to the pelvic floor doctor I go....she puts me through a ton of testing..more than the urologist in fact. Everything comes back healthy. In fact, I can out kegal most 20 year olds!(grin). She tells me that I am perfectly healthy and that this has to be hormone related...I didnt mention that I refused ALL hormone treatments as I am not a fan of increasing my odds for cancer. (mom and sister had breast cancer).

Then I go home and start researching on my own. I learned about three different procedures (Oshot, Mona Lisa Touch and Femicare, all of which are for women specifically, all which boast that they help reduce this symptom and improve overall bladder health among other things). I have already seen a doctor about the Oshot to get info, Monday I meet with a doctor who does the M.L.T procedure for more info). Not sure if I want to go through with any of these procedures, but I am definitely willing to hear about them. Interestingly how many stories I found connecting improvements in the bladder spasticity and women with MS.

You are not alone my friend. Please see your Gyn as well as a urologist, rule out health related issues and ask about hormone related ones!

    Hugs,
    MSNik

Hi! I also have frequency/urgency issues. I had bladder repair in my 30’s and my gyn says it is holding fine. (I am 52). I currently use Vesicare and it works very well for me. Definitely worth a try!

I am on 5 mg daily. I started at twice a day but I have Sjogrens also and the medicine made my dry mouth so much worse at night that I couldn’t sleep. Hope it works well for you!

I have tried vesicare with no luck as well as oxybutrin Iím beginning to think that maybe my issue is the fibroid on my uterus

    Hi msnik
Just wondering if you decided to pursue any of the procudures with your gyro. Nothing seems to be helping me as far as any of the meds they have tried. I feel like I live my life thinking about when and where I have to pee next. I am getting up like 3 to 4 times a night. I just feel like Iím missing out on many things because of this
    Thanks for listening
    Sue

Hi Sue. I had the MonaLisa Touch done at my gyno's office. It was not covered by insurance, but it was worth it. It has made a huge difference! look into it!

Re: Urinary problems ms or female problem

Sue, I have heard that it works better on people who do not have medical issues causing the muscle weakness; this from my doctor...however, if you are willing to risk it financially- there is no real reason why you couldn't try it. This, also from my doctor.

I think all of the new technologies definitely have a place for this sort of issue; but since most people aren't dealing with MS causing it- and since none of the technologies were developed for people with MS- its kind of hit or miss on how well the results will be. Also since they are all cash (not covered by insurance) it really depends what you are willing to shell out to try it.

If you can get a good deal- it might very well work for you.

I would have a very honest discussion with the doctor who provides this and ask him or her to talk to the representative from the company and ask them if there are any studies about doing this on a MS patient...you might be surprised and find out that there have been success stories OR that it is not recommended. I actually spoke to the Mona Lisa Touch company before I went through with that (my doctor set up a meeting with her local representative) and they were very honest that there was no information available at the time to guarantee me results; but they also said there was no reason not to try it.

Not sure if this helps..but let me know what you do!
