    Optic Neuritis?

I'm still in the diagnosis stage so I may or may not have MS (will get MRI results this week), although I've got just about ALL the symptoms. What I'd like to know is this... for the past few years, once in a while, I'll notice that all around me things look smokey. No one else notices this. I've not mentioned this to the Dr. as I've not really correlated this to the symptoms I've been having lately. When I see the Dr. this week I suppose I should mention it?

So, what do you experts think?

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

When I was first experiencing symtoms.optic nueritis was the first........went to eye doc and he sent me to a top notch nuerologist in MPLS.........first thing he said to me was you have MS.........and that was a good 6 years before the lesions showed up on the MRI.........definatley mention it to your doc or go see a very good eye specialist.........cortisone can help calm the optic nerve.......if left un treated you can loose your eye sight.....I am almost blind in my left eye

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

I have not been diagnosed with MS but have had many symptoms, my MRI was clear. I have had problems with my right eye since sept 2004. Sometimes I see "smoke" off to the side of me and when I turn to look nothing is there. Many years ago when I was pregnant I would wake and the room seemed to be filled with smoke that would disappear in seconds. I thought it was due to hormones so I dismissed it. Now that I am having these problems with my eye, I wonder because some people have mentioned that pregnancy seems to make symptoms appear. I went to three eye docs and all said my eyes were near perfect. I still have "halos" around lights, flourescent lighting makes things worse and my perephial vision is shaddowy. By all means talk to your doctor about your sight. It is very important to making a proper diagnosis by knowing all your symptoms. God bless.

By all means go to an eye specialist because you can lose your eyesight. I went to the eye doctor and he said my sight was perfect but I was blind in one eye and he sent me to an eye specialist and he sent me to the neuro. Please get it checked.

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

I have Optic Neuritis and possible MS. But so far the only definite diagnosis is recurrent Optic Neuritis. I also saw a smokey look too but it went way beyond that. I had 20/20 vision in both eyes at the beginning of last year when I had my physical. Then in June I got my first episode of optic neuritis. I now have 20/120 vision in my left and 20/50 in my right due to recurrent damage (when it is active it is much worse).

I can tell you that it is pretty simple to diagnose and a good opthomologist will be able to see the signs. You will almost always have an afferent pupil defect. There is also a difference in how you see the color red. Supposedly other colors as well although I mainly noticed the reds. I have had 2 three day rounds of solumedrol and while they help I keep getting it over and over. By October I started exibiting other symptoms of MS. While my MRI is was clear the last time I had it done both my GP and my new neuro feel pretty convinced that the other tests will indicate a stong probability. Sometimes it is just slow to show itself on the MRI's.

I am starting monday a 5 day IVIG treatment and a once a month follow up for 2 years in the hope to hold it off. I have had 2 episodes since october of also being unable to walk. I am really excited about it since because of my lack of MS diagnosis I am unable to get any other meds to keep the relapses at bay and atleast trials have shown the IVIG therapy to do this.

So for those of us in limbo, if you have a definate diagnosis of recurrent Active Optic Neuritis and have had what are clinical bouts of MS like symptoms, talk to you doctor about IVIG. I am really crossing my fingers on this one. It has been a rough 9 months and I have 5 children and work full time. I am seriously hoping this to hold off the symptoms or atleast keep them to a minimum. I live in Texas and the heat here is horrible. I know my symptoms get worse in the shower, I can only imagine what my summer would be been like and I was very worried about it.

    Smile Re: Optic Neuritis?

HI. I have not been diagnosed with Optic Neuritis, but after almost a year of double vision in the lateral gaze turning eyes to the left, the neuro opthamologist said that I have interneuclear opthamoliga in the right eye and nyastigmis in the left eye. But the brain MRI is not showing any leisons. I will be seeing another N.O in a few weeks. They are suggesting to look at the pons on the right of the brainstem. I have no idea what that means. I do experience alot of MS symptoms, but the eye thing is the most definate. There has been some talk of Myasthinia gravis, which double vision is a clear symptom of that. So right now I am in limbo and very disappointed that we haven't found an answer yet.
I have found that so many here are in the same situation. I don't think that anyone wants to have a diagnosis of MS, just a reason why you are feeling this way. I apreciate all of the support and knowlege that this board has for people who are going through this. Thank you all so much. For Estevens, I think that it is great that your doctors are following through with some kind of treatment even though you don't have a diagnosis yet. Please let us know how this goes ok.
    God Bless.

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

I do have MS, and was diagnosed with MS in December becaseu of an episode that affected my right eye.

It looked at first and for the following 2 weeks that there was something blocking my vision, I could almost see through it, but not quite. My vision is blurred, and had big problems with double vision, the halo effect to lights, and the extreme sensativity to lights. The halo around a flame in my right eye extends about 3 inches and comes to points, now my left eye is being affected the halo affect is about 2 inches and comes to points. Those of you who go through this will understand the point affect.

I was not diagnosed with having Optical Neuritis, actually I can not remember what it was that he called it, or if he did. I get bad bad migraines now in my right eye, and nothing seems to help it. They last up to 3 days. really messses up a good mood.

My other symptoms are: dizziness, virtago, numbing in feet, vibrations in both feet and legs, masive muscle spasms, and many more.

My first MRI showed several lesions as per medical records, with demyalination, but was not doagnosed at that time this was April 2004. They were more concerned about the concept that I smoked 1/2 pk cigs a day and that it was strokes.

My second MRI in December 2004 revealed more lesions and finally a diagnosis of MS.

Do any of you experience a humming in one ear, or a thumping like a muscle spasm in an ear. Just wondering, becasue I have since my episode in November.

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

Opps I also forgot to mention massive fatigue, even if you do nothing, forgetfulness, cognative thinking. I am sure I am forgetting something else.

When I went to the eye Dr. in
July 2004 my vision was -.25 left -.50 in right
January 2005 my vision was -.50 left -1.00 in right

so there was vision loss after the November episode.

    Re: Optic Neuritis?

The MRI came back clear. No lesions. That's good news, but, what about all the symptoms I've been having for the past year? Dr. is now looking into a virus, so has me on a long term anti-viral...this makes sense to me as this all started after having a nasty flu. If the meds don't help the symptoms within a months time, Dr. will refer me to a neuro.
