    MS symptons

    Hi
I'm new to this board, and have had several ms symptons now since June 2007 including tingling, numbness, burning, cold spots, dizziness, face pain, twitching, and buzzing. Recall having the dizziness and face pain a good 2 - 2 years ago also.
Have had 2 mri's on brain and whole spine which were all clear and a negative L.P.
Where I had the tingling for months non stop now returns in heat always in the same place, and when I turn my head the dizziness returns.
I'm 36, and have young children to bring up and the only thing my symptons come up as is ms.
I know until something shows on a test that no neuro can give me a dx anyway.
I've been tested for absolutely everything else.
I have high levels of thyroid antibodies, but am convinced the only thing causing these symptons is ms....................
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Without criteria symptoms for MS presenting in testing, it can be difficult -BUT not impossible- for the doctor to ascertain your problem. While I realize the stress the unknown can have on you, keep up your spriits and keep testing. Your MRI, if it is MS, may not show a sufficient number of lesions. Also, 15% of MS patients have a negative LP. My LP has been negative for 25 years.

There are many diseases as well as physical anomalies that can present with the symptoms you described. Make sure you select a neuro who deals with MS patients and ask a thousand questions. This way you can get an answer and your neuro will appreciate your proactive stance.

    melissallee..
OMG.. yoursymptoms and story sounds exactly like mine.. though I go for the second MRI today after the first one being in October last year .. the first time I got numbness etc happened after I got a stomach virus.
The neuro is very certain this is MS.. he is starting me on an antianxiety drug today and plans to start the first level of treatmenet for MS in 2 weeks.

    Hi
So if your neuro plans to start you on therapy in a couple weeks, has your October mri showed lesions?

Hi, melissalee. I'm sorry to hear about your life in limbo land. I know it's difficult to not know what's wrong, especially since it sounds like you're anxious to start some sort of therapy. I hear you on your sx -- nothing you wrote is uncommon in MS although as you know, there are many things that mimic MS sx (and sometimes MS lesions as well). Re: facial pain, it sounds like that might be Trigeminal Neuralgia, which can sometimes be secondary to MS. If you're interested, there's a good link in the post at the top of the page called "The Differential Diagnosis..." It explains what is involved in getting an MS dx and also cites about 100 other conditions that mimic MS.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

And good luck to you too, dream77! melissalee asked a good question -- although aggressive specialists are not unheard of, the majority will wait to treat with DMDs until there is enough evidence to meet the McDonald criteria.

    Hi again Melissalee!

I noticed you mention facial pain. How does your face feeling pain exactly? I am curious, because I find I have a lot of pain in my face (and head occasionally). It's a burning type of pain that drives me bonkers sometimes. Not in the forehead, but in my cheek area on either side.

Plus I have had burning mouth syndrome for quite a long time (a year).

When I'm in a flare/relapse, I suffer many more symptoms, but the facial pain and burning mouth are both mainstays it seems.

    Re: MS symptons

My pain used to be like a dull ache, went to dr and he said sinus pain so I would take a box of sinutab and week later pain gone. The pain was bilateral and across from nose.
I has this probably 4 times in all, then June 2007 got it and no meds tooks pain away, went to 2 dr's and tried sinus meds and sinus infection meds, strong pain relief and nothing stopped pain. Pain lasted 24/7 for about 6-7 weeks then left. It once again was a constant dull, burning ache pain, and the cold irritated it.
    Hope that all makes sense.

    Re: MS symptons

Forgot to mention the pain was bilateral, it was under eye brows, down nose, cheeks, and particulary around the jawline.

    It does make sense, yes

Have you been to a dentist and been checked for TMJ? (Tempomandibular Joint Disorder).

Reason I ask is, initially I went through several doctors who told me "Sinus infection". They finally did xrays, and nothing showed. I went to a dentist who was a specialist in chronic facial pain, had an EMG done, and was told I had TMJ.

I still 'have' TMJ, but I have mouth splints I can wear day and night to align my bite and so I don't grind my teeth at night (I didn't know I did this!).

Before all that, I had facial pain like you describe. A dull aching pain that seemed to never let up. I did find that pressure changes in weather made it worse on some days.

It's definitely an option to explore if you have not considered it yet. If you look into more information about TMJ (there's a forum here as well), you'll see that it can cause a myriad of symptoms.
