Falling Down

Hi All,
I'm wondering what people are doing or have done in the past to reduce their chances of falling. I'm an avid walker but in the past 6 months, I've had 3 pretty bad falls (nothing broken) but lots of scraps, bumps and bruises to to my arms, legs and face/head. It seems to just "happen." I trip and can't recover enough to keep myself from falling. Has anyone found a cane helpful for this? Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!
Thanks-

Re: Falling Down

Hi sunshine,

I do not like canes.

I prefer using Trekking Poles (hiking poles). They offer more stability and if you have balance problems you are able to compensate. My trekking Poles have stopped me from falling several times. You can get rubber tips so they can be used indoor or outdoor.

Trekking Poles make walking very natural unlike canes.

Re: Falling Down

I had a friend who had M.S. if I remember correctly she used a cane at first and became unstable on it falling and later used a walker. She didn't always use even this. Now she is in a nursing home where they watch her all the time.

Re: Falling Down

After a couple of falls I recognized that I'm not as nimble as I thought I was (duh!). I step more carefully these days, and hold handrails on stairs. I don't think I'm necessarily weaker, just increasingly clumsy. If weakness is part of your issue I would look into some sort of assistive device (cane, poles, etc)

For me, it depends on the day. I have a service dog who is my primary assistance and I have had 100% fall free with him. I also have a cane, forearm crutches, a rolling walker, and a power chair. I use each one depending on my day. On a really bad day I might just stay in bed! From my experience,if you can have tethers or cuffs for your can, trek poles, or forearm crutches you will ba better off. My cane has been dropped numerous times.
