Another one with MS symptoms... :(

I've been doing *A LOT* of reading the past 3-4 weeks, and I see a lot of these threads posted all over. Never having any issues and leading an otherwise healthy life till now I was pretty ignorant to this, and didn't know how many people actually live with some of these..."annoyances."

Exactly 29 days ago, while leaving work I jumped into my vanpool - clumsily - and hit my head pretty hard against the metal railing. Hard enough to make my face literally go numb for a few seconds/minutes (I don't remember). I slept it off, and still not feeling up to par went out to this outdoors event for a few hours.

I woke up the next morning and dropped back in bed, with flu-like symptoms which lasted about a week. I felt weak, had irritation to light for about 3 days, and broke into sweat for a few minutes (this actually happens 2-3 times a week randomly).

Four days after hitting my head it began:
-burning in my right foot
-tingling in my right foot
-numbness in my right foot
-weakness on the right side of my body sometimes
-weakness in both legs sometimes
-waking up with both arms asleep, sometimes with both legs asleep
-palpitations, one attack that felt like a straight-out heart attack\
-difficulty swallowing
-"weird" visual field...was slight, but it felt like I was wearing a slightly wrong prescription of glasses
-woke up one day with "sleep paralysis" - eyes opened but I could not move or say anything for about a minute
-slightly unsteady gait (right leg)
-loss of dexterity in right hand
-weakness in legs even when lifting 2 or 4lb weights
-muscle spasms which lasted 9-10 days

I think that's most of it. A lot of them have improved over time, most symptoms come and go though. For example today I've had slight difficulty swallowing, weakness on my right, and a mildly unsteady gait.

I've been persistent with getting checked out and still have a few more tests ahead of me (whatever it is I want early treatment), and blood tests/mri's have come back perfectly normal (no lesions), though I had a very low VitD level (18). My TSH also went from being normal to fairly high in a matter of days. The spinal tap was interesting however, with 2 oligoclonal bands and a decently elevated IgG level (2200).

Kind of sounds like MS...but this is a hell of a lot to happen, all so suddenly, huh? My sister's a doctor and spoke to a neurologist specializing in MS, and his opinion is this is too much to suddenly happen for MS- may be viral/bacterial (hopefully!). It's obviously too early to tell though.

What do you guys think? Did anybody else dx'd with MS start off similarly?

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

While a sudden stressful injury could certainly bring out MS symptoms, I would be more concerned with brain damage due to the knock on your head. Head trauma takes very little when you are hit in the right spot. I hope that you will get to a doctor.

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

I actually have to agree with Jayhawk here. A head injury does not cause MS; therefore the fact that you bumped your head and started these symtoms, is backwards. Normally, the symtoms would start to appear, even if you werent obviously aware of them, and then eventually a fall or slip, might take you to the ER or testing, which would find the lesions (which you dont have) and diagnose MS.

Im pretty sure you are safe here.

At least from MS. Brain Trauma is often missed and that would be my most obvious concern is that your doctors are testing you for everything and hopefuly finding nothing! Also, anxiety ans stress can cause 99% of the symtoms you mentioned. Although that sounds lame, anxiety over something like this can hurt your health, so please make sure you are addressing that possiblity as well.

MS doesnt come on like you describe; and the neurologist whom you spoke to is correct. It appears you have had the right tests to rule out MS as of now, and without lesions on your MRI, its impossible to say if you have MS or not...there are over 400 diseases which present like MS, and although it is sometimes hard to dx, it doesnt come on like you describe.

Hope you feel better!
Nikki

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

Thanks for the responses!!

Most things seem to be going away, except for the weakness on the right side that comes and goes and my right foot (seems to be getting worse over time, and it causes an unsteady gait at times).

Since this has such an odd presentation I think I'll have a fairly long road ahead of me in regards to a dx. I'll keep getting tests done and hopefully get some answers sometime soon!

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

There was a time I would not have believed an injury could result in a MS diagnosis, that is no longer true.

I have come to learn anything is possible with this disease. There is a person who was on Mystery Diagnosis that that stepped on her crochet hook which then went into her foot. This accident set off a chain of symptoms which in the end became a diagnosis of MS.

I hope you don't have MS. Best wishes with your testing.

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

So yesterday, looking at my reports and trying to "school" myself, I saw that my IgG index was normal (meaning there likely aren't antibodies being created within the brain/spine, as common with M.S.). It's on the high side though (0.58), where the limits for "normal" are <0.66 and <0.70 depending on where you look.

My IgG is barely elevated above normal (6.7 when the normal limit is <6.0), but my IgG serum is VERY high (2270 when normal is 768-1632). Because there is some permeability through the blood-brain barrier high IgG serum can contribute to high CSF IgG values, so it makes sense that my IgG in CSF is slightly elevated.

Rheumatoid diseases (like lupus) may be unlikely too since I have normal values for c-reactive protein tests and esr (used to detect inflammation).

NOT TO SAY I DON'T HAVE M.S., or am in the early stages, it's just kind of unlikely. What I have might even be worse!! I'm still playing the waiting game for tests (visual evoked potentials, EEG) and need to make appointments with "lyme literate" specialists (backed up for months I hear) and ophthalmologists to check for optic neuritis (which wasn't pointed out by my last doc who just retired a few months ago).

After the first "attack" I had a lot of clicking in my joints (especially on my "affected" weak right side, and in my at that time stiff neck) when I started doing physical therapy exercises...hmm...

Anyway, wish me luck in figuring this out guys. I'm not sure how relevant hitting my head was (who knows, maybe it was nothing or got the ball rolling for something). I've very quickly learned that doctors are as bad as dealership mechanics (very hit or miss), and you really need to work fast to school yourself so you can help them help you! Early treatment is the key with ANY health condition, even more so with autoimmune diseases. (It also helps when you have doctors in the family ). I'll keep everybody updated as I try to figure this out...

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

For me it took a "2 X 6" to make me aware that I had MS. I had had it since at least 14 yo, but like many, I passed on the symptoms as being teenage clumsiness. After 5 years "the big one" hit me.

Your knock on the noggin may be a coincidence, but it might be your "big one". You might look back and reflect on your life and see whether there were little things which you dismissed as inconsequential.

Finding a good neurologist can be difficult, especially in finding one who deals with MSers. You can inquire with your local MS Association or Society chapter or you can ask for a referral. Whatever path your journey takes, do let us know.

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

Hi There
I actually have had pretty similar symptoms to you as well. I have not been able to hash out exactly what has been going.
It largely started with an unsteady gait with some weakness in my left leg, largely my foot. Since then I have gone through a period of tingling and numbness in my foot(different areas each day), which eventually went away. My left side still seems "weak'" to me, but it is not affecting my gait so much that anyone else notices. When I run, I eventually have to slow due to increasing weakness/tightness in my leg, ranging from my ankle to behind my knee to my thigh.
I haven't been able to figure this out with the dr yet, but some friends who work as physical therapist assistants suggested it may be a problem with the sciatic nerve. Additionally, I would be very interested to here how your EMG comes back, if you get one

Good luck
Will

Re: Another one with MS symptoms... :(

My diagnosis started with an "traumatic event" (a big scream when I saw a cockroach like creature on a cupboard at a ski resort I was staying at)...really...I screamed, a bit exaggerated and for fun cuz the kiddo's were around. Anyway, the following am, I woke up with severe vertigo that spiraled into a myriad of symptoms that lasted several weeks. I am now on treatment and do have lots of clicking in my joints, achy, balance, dizzy issues etc all that pretty much were not there until the vertigo attach.
