Can I possibly have MS?

It has been a long several years of one symptom after another. For a long time. I just thought I was having several seperate issues, but now I wonder if they are all part of one disease or disorder. When I do a search of my symptoms, many things come up. One of them is MS. I thought I would post all of my issues over the past year or two and see what you guys think. I know you are not Dr's and this is just a message board, but its always nice to get insight from people going through the same things. And I am also seeing a Dr. currently and waiting on all of my labs to come back.

1. Chronic lightheaded feeling. This comes or goes.. Can last hours or days. Feel unsteady and just kinda weird. Never fainted but almost felt like it a few times. Also can get "heavy eyes" where I just feel like Im really tired and can't always focus. Brain fog feeling.. This symptom makes it hard to work, drive etc. So frustrating. Oh yeah, almost feel like a get a "shock" every now and then. Like a seizure like feeling or electrical feeling ..so strange

2. Headaches in the same exact spot. Will have them for 2 or 3 days then not again for maybe a month or more. When I get them, they come on really quick. I usually have to take OTC meds within 15 mins and lay down with an ice pack for a short time. This usually helps.

3. Hair loss/Hair thinning/Hair breakage. (Yeah, this is not helpful for a single 39 year old woman)

4. Trouble swallowing/tightness in throat (diagnosed with esophageal dysmotility with no known cause)

5. Numbness in hands only at night when sleeping. Sometimes wakes me up

6. Weird "twitch" near my lip. Happens randomly. The muscle under my lip will kinda spasm and pull my bottom lip to the side for 15-20 seconds at a time. Maybe several times a day then nothing for a week... so weird

7. Fatigue/no energy

8. Dry, itchy skin

Gosh, there is probably more but I cant think of them all now. This is what I do know I have. I know I have a gallstone and last time I had bloodwork I had low ferritin and high DHEA (was not treated)

Just went to my PCP with all of these symptoms and he did alot of bloodwork. He ordered CBC, Metabolic Panel, ANA, Sed rate, B12, Ferritin,
a1c, and another one or two. Waiting on the results. Any clues as to what might be going on with me ?

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Kimberly,
welcome to the boards...unfortunately, you are right, we are not doctors and not able to dx you...but I think I can put your mind somwhat at ease that most of the symtoms you listed do NOT sound like MS symtoms at all. MS is a neurological disease of the central nervous system, with the only symptom you mentioned being fatigue and no energy really resembling a MS symtom, I wouldnt be overly worried about MS.
Numbness, the type you describe isnt MS- when its MS, its nerve damage, and it doesnt ususally come and go....even the brain fog, which you mention, which can be MS related, is more cognitive- and you would notice it alot more often if it was really a MS thing....the rest of what you mention make ME think Thyroid? possibly? Your blood work will determine if that is off.

There is no blood work for MS- it can be dx from MRIs, and assorted other radiographical tests...mainly, by ruling everything else out. So, if you still dont get answers after having the blood work done, you can always challenge your doctor to order you some tests along those lines. Hope you get your answers soon!
Nikki

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Hi, it sounds like you may have hypothyroidism. at least all your symptoms seem to indicate it. make sure to get TSH, T4 Free and T3 uptake done. In addition try to get 25(OHD) test for vitamin D level also done. high level of TSH will indicate hypothyroidism. Please bear in mind that this is a very complicated subject.
do you feel unusually cold, tire easily, shorter eyebrows, intense itch, slow digestion, history of gallstones, bone spur, etc.

Good luck and God bless you.

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

blood work for vitamin D level 25(OHD) will help. low levels of vitamin D is found in MS pts.

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Hi everyone, I'm kinda a lurker... Sorry to intrude. I have been Diagnosed with Fibro recently but have had Chronic Fatigue since 99. I have been tested for everything (I am Hypothyroid, on meds since 03), or so I thought. They haven't tested me for ms which makes me wonder... But don't know much about it. I've had constant brain fog since 99, it was one of my first symptoms, along with fatigue. The fog isn't just forgetfulness & stuff... It's like living in a dream or looking though tinted glass... Kinda a intoxicating feeling. I think that has been the worst part of all for me... 12 yrs now, & I'm only 30. This last year has been the worst. I've been getting headaches atleast 4 days out of the week for awhile now. Got used to it. I'm not one for medications unless I have no choice. I am on Cymbolta now for Anxiety. Then I don't push myself, over do it or stress.... So it's helped so much! But, if I do stress I get the awful flare up. This last time I was puking sick. I'm glad to have a diagnosis & learn how to control it, but nervous that I may have ms. I never understood Fibro till now & the symptoms all make so much sense! But I heard ms is allot like it.
Anyhow, I don't mean to take over this post... Kimberly had a good question & you all gave wonderful answers! So, wondering if I have ms symptoms.

Kimberly~ If I were you I'd tell your Dr all of your symptoms. Tell him you want to be tested for Thyroid & not just the basic TSH test, you want all Thyroid tests done. You also should be tested for Lupus, Lyme, & Vitamin D Levels. If I were you I'd start with the basic tests, especially thyroid, & then test for other things like MS. You want to get the basics out of the way first. Dr bills can pile up fast!
Also, be firm. Dr's want you in & out of their office asap. I put up with that for years. I seen a Neurologist recently & her bed side manners were awful. I finally had enough & yelled at her till she left the room. That's not like me.... But I'm so tired of Dr's thinking they know everything, yet are absolutely no help.
If you are Hypothyroid (like me) I suggest demanding Armour Thyroid or another medicine that is more natural like it. I've tried many & had had awful results but love Armour! Many people do better on Armour.
Hopefully it is just Thyroid probs which can be treated

Welcome to the MS Boards

You noted CFS , Fibro, and Anxiety in addition to hypothyroid. While your anxiety alone can present with MS like symptoms, your CFS muddles the picture IMO. My cousin developed CFS and ran a major gauntlet of tests and specialists. He finally "outgrew" CFS after 12-15 years. During his CFS years he was quite young (16) and could do very little. Once the CFS left or disappeared, he started college, got married, and is now a dad. He now enjoys each day free of CFS. I hope the same for you as well.

If you suspect MS, you should see a neurologist who deals with MS. You will be bringing a boatload of preexisting conditions which will weigh heavily in the diagnosis.

Do you have MS? I have learned, long ago, to answer most such questions with a maybe. I truly hope that you do not because your plate is quite full already.

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Thank You I hope the cfs goes away... Always hated the fog... Unfortunately I think I'm stuck with the Fibro. It keeps getting worst but I'm learning how to control it which is good. Having CFS all these years I've managed to push myself. Now I can't do that because if I do, I'm in pain & at times, sick. With CFS I'm used to my body feeling heavy, sore tired... But the Fibro symptoms are so much worst.
I have to catch up on my medical bills before I get more tests done. I think I'll feel better once I have ms tests done. I understand the Fibro & MS are treated very much the same... But I believe more is needed with ms to prevent the body from attacking itself? I guess that statement alone makes me wonder... Almost like my body is it's own enemy...

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Martinfarm,

Fibro,is a catch all phrase (term) for nerve pain. MS is a autoimmune disease, which the body does attack its own Meylin Sheath, the part of the nerve conductor which sends signals to the central nervous system....depending on what type of nerve damage is done, it can feel very much like Fibro....however, it happens in an entirely different way.

Much research is being done on virus's and how they may lead to the potential to develop MS. CFS is the same virus as Mono or Epstein Barr....there very well may be a connection. If you asked 100 people if they had ever had any of these viruses, 80% would say they did. I happen to be one of the ones who has never had them....

The treatment for Fibro, is treat the nerve pain....the treatment for MS, is there is none, but we treat the symtoms....yes, there are drugs which are supposed to prevent progression (im on Rebif) and there are drugs which work with the symtom management (much like Fibro) however depending on where the nerve is damaged, and to what extent, sometimes nerve pain drugs do not work. Ive been on Cymbalta, Lyrica and Neurontin and not one of them has helped...

Keep us posted....
Nikki

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Thanks Nikki, great info!
Yup, I had mono a few years before cfs. I then had a back injury in 05 which may the Fibro may be a result of...
I do feel like I have more muscle problems then nerve... Like my muscles are overworked.
I'm kind of irritated that after 12 years & sooo many tests, I haven't been tested for ms... But then, Dr's haven't been any help until more recently...

Re: Can I possibly have MS?

Hi again. Since MS doesnt have a specific test, it is a matter of ruling out everything else....that makes it that much harder to dx....youre on the right track and if you need to vent, or ask us, we are always around!
Take good care of yourself....having MS is much like having Mono, with the endless fatigue....most of us try to ignore it, but when it really zaps you, you have to listen to your body and get the rest it requires...
hang tough...your on your way to answers!
Nikki
