MS and Eyes

Hello everyone!! I have not been on here since 2008 but I am back for help! In 2007 I was diagnosed with "possible MS" but I soon after became pregnant with my first child. That was a life saver! After I had her, less than a year later, we decided to have another child! During my two pregnancies, I had minimal MS problems. I had my second child this last November and within a month my symptoms (burning leg pain, headaches, aches and pain, etc) had came back. Since January, I have lost a lot of my eyesight. When I see, it is very blurry (like I am looking in to someone elses glasses and also I have a lot of vertigo). I went to the opthalmologist last Friday because I thought I just needed glasses all of the sudden but I soon found out that I have optic atrophy and myelination in my eyes. I guess I am going blind? I called my MS specialist on Monday and they JUST got back to me today but the nurse said she will have to talk with the neurologist and it will be later in the week next week before she gets back with me. Has anyone else had this diagnosis with MS. Please help! I have two babies, a wonderful husband, I work full time, and I am also in grad school! Please tell me I will still have my sight! I have worked way to hard to not be able to see ! Staying positive! Any motivation from you all would be so helpfull!!!!!!

Re: MS and Eyes

Welcome back. Your pregnancies released hormones which can stop the MS.

As to the loss of vision, I have experienced what you went through several times. You might try some polarized sunglasses. I have been wearing them since 2002 when the light sensitivity really buggered me to no end. Blurred vision is usually ho mine starts. I have found relief by using an eye patch or covers too as well as cold compresses.

You should seek out visual assistance during these times so that you can continue your studies. Your university's equal opportunity office should be able to accommodate you until you are better or finish school. As to your work, you can use ADA guidelines to assist you. If your vision problem is only temporary, you might need to take a leave of absence. If it is a permanent problem, then ADA protects you by requiring your employer to make reasonable accommodations which will allow you to continue employment.

In my times of vision loss, I have always felt that my vision would return. I rely upon my faith to get me through the loss. After the first time, each subsequent time has seemed easier. I will keep you and yours in my prayers. May God richly bless you each day.

Re: MS and Eyes

I am hoping that my vision will be back to normal soon, however the opthalmologist doesn't think it will. She said that the atrophy is not reversible and we will have to wait another 6 months to see if there is any change going on right now. I am actually not on any medications and haven't been since late 2008. I am in such agony right now but my next appointment isn't until May. Do you have a lot of leg pain with your MS?

Re: MS and Eyes

I have had quite a lot of pain in my legs. The best luck for the pain has been a heating pad.

I am sorry to hear about the atrophy. I will keep you in my prayers. Stay strong!
