    Tingling - MS?

I have been having on and off tingling for the past few months and am worried it could be MS. It is mostly when I'm sitting and have felt it in my back, shoulders, and arms. I had it a little in my legs as well last week. There is no numbness to follow, just tingling. It also will jump from shoulder to shoulder at times. I have an appointment with my doctor next week.

    Welcome.

Your tingling could be attributed to many things. I have found that intuition can be a great diagnostic tool, at least in getting us to pay attention to our bodies.

If MS is considered, then you should see an MS Specialist. If you are seeing a regular family doctor, they can order the blood tests which can screen out Lyme disease (must be specified to be tested) to vitamin deficiencies. There are many diseases/disorders/deficiencies which can mimic MS. If your initial physical and blood tests are negative (normal), then you could have a neurological cause. In that case a referral is often the quickest way of getting to the specialist.

For now, I would lay aside any worries. Worries and lead to anxiety which can, on its own, mimic MS.

    Re: Tingling - MS?

Just to throw out another possibility. The type of tingling you mention, espeically since there is no numbness involved, could be a herniated disc in your back. This is something that will show up on a MRi if they scan your spine....especially in the neck (cervical) area, this would cause the symptoms you mention.
You might want to talk to your primary doctor about ordering a MRi just to see if anything is going on....but if you do it, also ask about ordering it with and without contrast, which will also pick up any abnomalities which could be neurological as well. If you have a really good relationship with your doctor, ask for a brain MRI with and without contrast at the same time.....this is a standard MS test, which even if your family doc cant interpret, you can still take to a MS specialist for further reveiew. If you get any of the tests done, please do not leave the testing center without a copy of the films, either on film or CD to take with you. You willl be needing them in the future!

    Hope you feel better soon.
