burning and numbness for more then 20 years

I am 43 years old mother of 2 girls.
I have a medical problem and I am looking for an answer.
Since I remember I have this burning pain in the left site of my body. This include left leg, lower abdomen, left upper back, left arm, left neck, and a WHOLE face this include my tongue also. Sometimes this burning pain is minimal and sometimes when I feel a sharp and a burning pain in my left lower abdomen then the burning become more intense. Burning pain is unbelievable and then I feel numbness in the left site of my body. When this happens I feel that my right lower leg is burning too. Then I feel "tight sensation" like I am wearing very tight socks up to my calfs in both lower legs. I feel sharp pain in my left heel, left pointing finger, left upper back, and my tongue. I have also a blurring vision. This burning pain can last for 2 months and up to year or two years. Then slowly is slowing down. Then stops and I feel fine for couple of months and then is coming back and starts again from the left low abdomen.
Last 2 years I did not have this burning and numbness pain until, a month ago when I went to YMCA for a swimming class. This was my 6th swimming class. During this class I was trying not to sink in the water and then my burning started again. The burning on the left side of my body and my whole face including my tongue. I couldn't swim, my left leg was so weak that I was swimming in a circle. Since then I have burning, numbness, and stiffness.
I had 6 MRIs of my brain and neck and they are fine. All blood works are good too. My neurologist for the past 15 years try to find an answer for me. I was trying different kind of medications and nothing work. For the past 4 years I am taking Paxil 25 CR one before bed and doesn't help.
I am looking for an answer.
May someone help me please?

 Sorry to hear you had trouble- and another  Welcome to you! :)

What I wrote that there are some vascular problems which can manifest with the burning sensations which you described. If you have already cleared this possibility with a cardiologist, then the neurologist should be able to find another reason that is neurogenic.

Re: burning for more then 20 years
thanks for a quick reply.
I did see a cardiologist and a neurologist. my cardiologist said that this is not his area. my neurologist did all of the posible tests and they are good. even i saw a reumatologist just before when I was pregnant. I think that I will go back to see him again.

thanks again,

Did you continue to have the burning during pregnancy?

yes, during both pregnancies. my older daughter will be 21 years old. and I remember that I had this burning a long time before the pregnancy.

Hi Benka
Im sorry you had problems with the board. Im not even seeing where I replied to you! But, what I had said was you had mentioned that you have been with your doctor for 15 years, didnt you? I asked if you had ever had a second opinion. I also asked if anyone had ever suggested Fibro to you....your burning and pain sound alot like Fibro symptoms and it is very possible to have both MS and Fibromyalgia. I also asked if your doctor was a MS specialist, and if not, does he specialize in any particular part of neurology? A motor disorders specialist would specialize in Parkinson's and ALS, a general neuro usually specializes in headaches/ migranes...and then you have neuros who specialize in strokes...I was just curious if yours has any real significant MS experience, because for some MSers, numbness and what you describe are normal.
My onset symptom, 9 years ago was a numb, burning tingling hand and fingers...years later, I still have it. It never went away and no pain drugs or nerve drugs (cymbalta, lyrica or neurontin) have helped. I learned to live with it and recognize that the change in seasons (temperatures), high humidity and extreme heat can make it worse...

I think thats all I had written!

Re: burning for more then 20 years
Many MSers who have had pregnancies enjoy a remission due to the production of estriol which researchers believe has the ability to suppress MS. Estriol is only produced naturally during pregnancy.

If it is not vascular nor can your neuro determine the cause, then, as Nikki said, it is quite possible to be burdened with both fibro and MS.

If you have not seen an MS Specialist, I would encourage you to do so. If your current neuro is an MS Specialist, then perhaps some fresh eyes might see things differently. If you have not run through the Revised McDonald Criteria, I would do so. At the very least it could eliminate any doubts regarding the possibility of MS.
