ENG abnormal test results...So confused

Can anyone help me, I am so confused and I am not getting a straight answer from the dr. I got my ENG test results back and it states "suggests a mix of peripheral associated with central vestibular abnormalities" When the dr talked to me about it she said she wasnt sure what was going on. I am currently in the process of ruling out ms and was wondering if these results are siding toward ruling ms in or out? She recommended I see an opthamologist and ms specialist next. Also what the heck does a mix of peripheral associated with central vistibular abnormalites mean? I have been googling till my eyes blur but dont understand. lol If anyone could shine a little light I would be wonderfully grateful.

Thanks

She recommended I see an opthamologist and ms specialist next.---

I think your doctor knows the limitations of her knowledge and knows that your situation appears to be a neurological issue. She might suspect MS or may be doing you a favor of having you see the MS Specialist first. Take her advice, and hopefully a referral, and a copy of your records and take the next step.

No single test can specifically identify MS. Central vestibular disorder is a balance disorder and it is caused by a problem in the connecting nerves of the brain, which usually occurs due to tumors in the brain stem, multiple sclerosis, or brain stem vascular disease.

Have you had vision problems too? If so, I would encourage you to see a neuro-ophthalmologist a doctor a "wee bit" more specialized than an ophthalmologist, though it might be easier to find an ophthalmologist.

Lay aside your worries. An abnormality to one doctor may not be an abnormality to another. If you cannot get a referral to an MS Specialist, your local MS Association or Society office can probably assist you. If you have a teaching hospital, they will most likely have an MS Specialist (but not a guarantee).

Re: ENG abnormal test results...So confused

Thank you for your help and yes i do have vision problems. My vision goes blurry off and on starting about 2 years ago with pain behind my left eye and then the pain traveled down to my left jaw. I saw a neuro and to make a long story short, he sat with me for about 10 minutes did some simple tests and said he doesnt think i have ms. he did however do two mri's without contrast and he said they were clean. I was then sent to ent doctor for dizziness and my previous text is what she said. My pcp said he doesnt think i have ms because he has to refer to what the neuro said but my ent doctor gave me a referral to an opthomolgist and ms specialist. Just by that information I think she thinks I may have ms. I am just so confused by the different doctors opinions and not sure what to think anymore. My ent also wants me to go for physical training.
Seriously frustrated lol

Re: ENG abnormal test results...So confused

You could have Optic neuritis (ON) which can be a separate problem from MS or can be a sub-set of MS. the neuro you saw did you a disservice. They should have sent you to a neuro-ophthalmologist.

Your initial MRI result could have been clear, or the neuro could also have missed the signs. If it was clear, it could simply mean that your timing was too early. I get ON and I also have lost my vision a few times. For me, it is MS, or more specifically ON due to MS. You could have ON and never develop MS. i have several friends in Japan who have only ON while others started with ON and developed into MS.

Consider yourself lucky to have such a fine doctor who places her patient's needs above herself. That is, she knows her limitations and knows a specialist is better equipped to assist you. Your doctor- She's a keeper!

As to the pain behind your left eye, I get a pain behind my right eye. I have gotten relief from my pain by wearing a pair of polarized sunglasses. The effect is not immediate, but after a few days, I felt a difference. On an overcast day, I might be able to do without my sunglasses, but it is usually the 2nd or 3rd overcast day. I wear the sunglasses indoors too because the light frequency of certain light bulbs affects me. As to battling immediate pain, I use acupressure at a point perpendicular to the pain. I also have an eyepatch which helps a great deal when even my sunglasses do not work.

i would definitely see both specialists just as your doctor has suggested. After 2 years, MRI images can change and in the hands of a specialist, an MRI may have more to say.

Stick with us here and we will help you through the process. I would say that if you are following your doctors advice, you are on your way towards a definitive diagnosis.
