Unhappy my little toenail is dark-coloured

    Hi everyone,

i think tat this is my 3rd attempt in trying to find some relief from this embaressment. I hope tat people understand what i m describing.

For a long time now (mebbie even years!!), my little toenail is dark in colour but not black. there is no half-moon, no pinkish-healthy colour & no white bits that one normally clips away. it is curved unlike normal nails & some of the nail bed is covered by skin only (where it should have been a growing nail); hence, this toe is "swollen". sometimes, the skin hardens, then i either peel it and/or clip it away, next it becomes swollen & tat area becomes more red. the vicious cycle goes on & on.

wat luck ... can someone offer help/solutions, anything? i have tried describing the best i can. if more info is needed, just ask me in this forum.

one more thing, dunno if it's related to this: can this mean why i have feet/soles that are very smelly?

i thank you all for your time & effort & help in advance.

What you have is called Pterygium and is a forward growth of the cuticle at the proximal nail fold - the portion of skin that touches the nail plate. This is a condition that requires a physician to surgically remove that portion of skin that grows forward covering the nail plate. Every time you cut it back yourself, it grows back with a vengeance. Every time you cut it, it gets harder and thicker. What it is is scar tissue, and underneath the scar tissue is LIVE tissue - not a nail plate. When you cut away the hard skin, you are revealing the live tissue of the nail bed, which is why it looks so red.

Go see a podiatrist - they will be able to correct the problem so the excess skin doesn't grow back, but the nail plate will not grow normal again, if it grows at all.

Re: my little toenail is dark-coloured

    thank u marti,

btw, another thing tat i left out by accident. is the condition tat u describe i have be the reason why my affected toenail is thick? cos my other fingernails & toenails aren't as "thick".

the "darkish" toenail now is swollen (yup, i peeled/clipped away skin), reddish in colour tat area; i mean, i can "bend the nail" & it stays tat way, use the nail board to file that area & it's still dark-coloured ... if anyone look at how their littlest toenail NORMALLY grows & shapes, u will know wat i mean. i think i have lost about 30% of the nail to this condition.

i will go see tat specialist, Marti. sorry, i don't know how to spell it. but i got another problem which i must ask about first; will post differently. thank u so much for your kindness & patience.

You could very well have a Pseudomonas Bacterial infection in that toenail. Pseudomonas begins as a yellowish stain and will traverse through the stages of light green, dark green, brown, then black. The bacteria feeds off the moisture and contaminates in the nail plate/bed. The dark discoloration is a by-product of the infection and is composed mainly of iron compounds.

DO NOT keep cutting away at it as this will only make matters worse. Please see your physician or a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and prescription.

    Hi Marti,

Thank u for helping this timid mouse.

One more question: how much will such a trip cost me? i'm not really in "earning power" level now.

I will go see the specialist & i know wat to tell him/her. afterall,i wan 2b free from skin/nail/foot problems, which come all together:

    1) this dark-coloured toenail
    2) feet tat smell for some reason, though it is not always like this
    3) the skin of the soles of my feet peeling

anyone went through similar case like me?

If your feet smell and you have peeling skin along with the toenail problem, you could also have a yeast or fungal skin infection. I believe you should see a doctor or podiatrist regardless of the money. The condition will only get worse! If you wear the same pair of shoes every day, the fungal/yeast spores could be 'living' in the inside of the shoe lining. You have more than one problem going on with your feet and it will take a proper diagnosis and proper medication to get rid of it.

    Hi Marti,

Yup. I will go to see a GP asap & will keep all readers posted. I tot about this yesterday as I typed & it filled me with worry. u know, the usual "will my toe get chopped off", "i shouldn't have cut so much of the nail" ... all this while fiddling with the "dark-coloured toenail".

I've been to ur webpage, Marti. after seeing graphic images of toenails & fingernails ..... mine can be considered less serious than tat.

anyway, thank u for ur suggestions. me $$$ in me pocket to see the doctor. hope it's good news, that it is not too late.
