    big toe nail injury--hematoma

about 3 months ago, i went snowboarding and due to extra pressure on my foot, one of my big toe nails turned purple--the whole nail. it was painful at first, but after a few days the pain went away. i went to the doctor and he said that if it was painful, he could drain the blood, but since it didn't hurt, he left it alone. so it was an ugly purple toe for months but felt fine like a regular toe nail until now, when i just noticed that the nail is separated from the toe pretty far down. i can't tell where it's connected and i'm holding it in place with a band-aid. except for right after the injury occurred, it has never been, and still isn't, painful.
am i going to lose this toe nail? if so, will the nail bed be really sensitive? how should i care for it for now? will the nail grow back?
i also read that fungus could be a problem for toes with unconnected nails and want to know how i can apply antifungal medication in between the toe and raised nail.
sorry for the long post--any help is GREATLY appreciated as i am currently freaking out about it.
    thanks.
