Skin shreading under cuticle - any idea what this is?

    There's a photo at [ REMOVED ]

Every few months, the skin under my cuticles starts to "shread" After a week or so, it goes away. I've got a few questions:

    1. What's this area of the finger called (between cuticle and knuckle)
    2. Does this condition have a name? Is "Shreadding" the correct term?
    3. Is there a cure or way to speed-up the healing process?

Somebody told me it's related to vitamin C deficiency. However, this time around I've been taking mega-doses of C and it doesn't seem to be making a difference...

The area between the proximal nail fold and the knuckle is called the e p o n y c h i u m. When this area begins to peel, it is usually because the skin in this area is dry. You might benefit greatly from twice daily applications of a good quality nail and cuticle oil such as Solar Oil or Botanical Oil. Solar Oil is available in fine nail salons and in Ulta Cosmetic outlets. Botanical Oil is available in the nail department of Sally Beauty Supply. Both oils contain the correct herbal ingredients to rehydrate, moisturize, condition and heal the skin and nails.
