Fingernail Damage
My nail was not growing correctly. It was removed by an orthopedic surgeon 5 weeks ago. He inserted and stitched a piece of gauze under the cuticle. But my nail is not growing back. Will it ever grow?

Re: Fingernail Damage
Why would he stitch a piece of gauze under the cuticle? I don't understand that part. Does he intend to remove it later? Usually, when the nail root is removed, a new nail will not grow back because the part that developes the nail plate cells was removed. I'm worried about that piece of gauze!!

Re: Fingernail Damage
My nail was growing upwards on half of the nail bed. The doctor thought the skin was hard and the new nail would not attach to it and he roughened the skin and the gauze is supposed to keep the nail bed from becoming hard again. The gauze is pretty dirty now and there is no nail in sight. Should there be nail growth after 5 weeks? Should I remove the gauze?

Re: Fingernail Damage
Yes, remove the gauze. If it is dirty, it is holding bacteria that can end up causing infection and you don't need that.

The nail plate rides forward on the nail bed upon a series of rails and grooves, much like a train rides forward on its tracks. The rails areon the surface of the nail bed and the grooves are on the underside of the nail plate. If, for any reason, the rails on the nail bed are removed or turn into 'regular' skin from the lack of a proper covering (the nail plate) then a new nail would have nothing to attach to. Depending on your genetics for nail growth, you should have seen a little bit of new nail emerging from under the cuticle area in 5 weeks time. Maybe no more than 1/16th of an inch, but there should be something. Did he just remove the nail plate, or did he remove the root? The root lies deep under and behind the cuticle rea.

Re: Fingernail Damage
The gauze is removed. There is a small nail and it looks very bumpy instead of a regular smooth nail. Is this normal? Will the nail eventually get smooth?

Thanks for responding so quickly and helping me with this problem.
