loose toenails

I am in my mid 40's. In the last few months, I have bumped 2 of my toes on furniture and the front of the toenails have lifted off of the nail bed. The nails keep growing but don't seem to be reattaching to the nail bed and now they are constantly getting dirt far up underneath the nail. Should I cut them all the way back as far as I can or have I just not given it enough time to properly heal? Also, what could be causing my nails to be lifting more easily than before? They are not thin or discolored at all. I have also noticed that my fingernails are much harder than ever before.

Re: loose toenails

Bumpting the nails causes trauma to the nail bed and the result can be nail plate separation. Remember, toenails grow much slower than fingernails. A fingernail can take from 3-6 months to replace itself from cuticle to free edge; a toenail can take about a year. Keep the nail clean and dry and apply a drop of peroxide to them to be sure no infection is present. If a yellowish discoloration appears in the nail plate and apparent debris in the area of separation, fungal spores may be present. Keep an eye on them!
