    Longitudinal melanonychia: TREATMENT???

    Longitudinal melanonychia: treatment?
    Hi

I've done quite a lot of reading about longitudinal melanonychia (dark pigmented bands on the nails), but I've not come across any discussion of treatment options. Even if it is benign (common in many dark-skinned individuals), it is obviously disfiguring so even some form of cosmetic treatment would be better than nothing.

E.g. -- first thing that comes to mind would be some sort of a nail bleach, although this doesn't seem plausible since the pigmented bands run throughout the thickness of the nails, and are not just superficial. Opaque nail polish is a simple cosmetic solution but that's only really feasible for women.

And looking beyond cosmetic options, is there any way to supress the production of the melanin that forms these bands on the nails? More and more of these bands form (very slowly, over a long time) on my nails and I would like to know if there's any way to halt or reverse this problem. My dermatologist reassures me it's a benign condition but says he doesn't know of any possible treatments for it.
