    Habitual tic deformity?

Both my thumbnails have been deformed for as long as I remember. I think the cause was because, when I was around 6, I was playing with my nails and even using a TOOTHPICK to pick at the cuticles. Yes, I'm rather silly for doing that. I really regret it. My thumbnails swell outwards in the middle, like curving upwards, and have lines(?) I'm not too sure on how to describe this. I'm scared that I've sone permanent damage to my nailbed and that it will never heal..

Anyway, I looked it up yesterday and found that it's called habit tic deformity. Apparently, it's caused by constant picking at the cuticles. I'm rather unsure if this is my case, though, because my toenails are like this as well. And I never noticed picking them before. I don't think I've been picking at my nails for the past few weeks, but they don't seem to be recovering at all. Should I get lidex? Or bandage them? I hate my nails because they're so embarrassing.

    Re: Habitual tic deformity?

    Hi,

I have exactly the same as you have done for a couple of years now where I bite/pick around my thumb nails without even realising I do it! I have been wearing acrylic nails, this makes them look nice but sure it doesn't help but as with you they look so horrific I can't not wear them!

If you or anyone else knows if there is anything that can help cure this please let me know.

    Thanks
