    Damaged Toenail Removed.. now what?

A few years ago, a book shelf fell on both of my big toes. One nail was treated and removed while the other wasn't treated and just fell off. The nails have grown back much thicker than normal and I've gotten used to it.

As the treated nail grew back, it became a bit loose. I didn't think much of it. This past weekend (July 5), my family and I traveled via plane. As we deplaned, the loose nail ran into the back of my daughter's shoe which caused the nail to nearly lift completely off the nail bed. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see a doctor until the following day.

The ER doctor I met with removed the nail and used silver nitrate to kill off the nail matrix to prevent the nail from growing back. It's been four days now since the procedure and it still hurts (I've been taking my prescribed pain medication) and at times the toe feels numb. I can't keep it constantly elevated. The area just below the cuticle is very red and "angry" and there seems to be a dark brown stain around the side of my nail bed on the skin and around the top.

We're back home now and trying to find a GP that take our insurance (I can't afford another ER visit). I soaked it for about 20 minutes today in water with an antibacterial liquid (Listerine). The nail bed looks absolutely disgusting; some have gone so far as to say that it's infected. I wasn't given any antibiotics.. just the pain medication and a nitrate 1% cream to apply each time I clean and bandage it.

I guess I don't know what I'm asking. Should I keep soaking it in the water/Listerine solution? I don't have epsom salts. I'm at a loss until I can get in to see a doctor. Any help/suggestions would be really appreciated. Thank you SO much!!

EDIT: I posted an image to my author page on ********.
