    Gel Nails

Hi I Recently got gel nails done, product similar to Shellac, I had a very bad reaction, itching, fungal infection on all nails, swelling and cuts around nails. Went back to place where I got it done, she said I must be allergic to product. One month on my nails are no better. I have tried the Vic, vinegar, bleach but none of these work. My nails look dreadful, I put nail polish on during the day while I am had work. Has anyone else experienced this and has anyone any quick cures? Thanks.

    Hi,
    Fingernails or toes?
    A photo can be helpful.
How long did you wear the nail until the fungus started?
    Regards,
    Mario

    Hi Mario

Had the gel on less that 12 hours when the infections happened, four weeks on and my nails are still in terrible condition. Cuts on the skin around around my and five fingers have a fungal infection. Think i will have to go to a Dermatologist as they are not getting better

Nail polish suffocates the nails. You should see a dr, they can prescribe an anti fungal nail polish you put on daily and peel off or wipe off with alcohol once a week. Another option are pills, but it's hard on the liver.

The vinegar and Vic method takes months of routine and maintenance. Lots of filing, clipping, and soaks. I had an infectin on my big toenail once. If its on your fingers yu could probably spread it around. I'd go see a dr.

Yes. I did gel nails back in my day. You don't get fungal infections from allergic reactions. You get from moisture exposure. Did they use a dehydrator or primer on your nails prior to the shellac?

Thanks again for all your replies.

I got the them originally two months ago and experience a slight itch on my fingernails that time. When I got them done a month ago, I woke up with a very bad itch. I removed the nails immediately. My nails had swollen and were all red around them.

I think the girl used a primer prior to the product, it was not shellac but a similar one.

the fungal infection started a few days later and its not getting any better.

Ahhh! That's why you got a fungal infection. She was supposed to use a dehydrator FIRST before the primer. Dehydrator balances PH (dries out) the nail, then primer makes the shellac stick to the nail. It was the start of a fungal infection. Fungal infections normally develop over time though, I don't know how quickly they can set in.

    Hi

Can you explain what a dehydrator is?

I am going in to see the lady tomorrow and show her my nails.

    Thanks again for your help

    Re: Gel Nails

Nail dehydrator pretty much removes all the dirt, moisture, and oil from your nail prior to the application of acrylic or gel. When you file the nail you've got all those groves in there, which are great places for moisture to get trapped under the gel. Without dehydrator, she basically just put shellac on a dirty nail.
