Do you think my son has a neurological disorder?

My 13-year old son has been struggling with depression and anxiety for 1 year. He is currently on Luvox ER 150 mg. It is his third antidepressant. Recently, he has begun showing new symptoms: stuttering; slow, slurred speech; laughing while he is upset; and speaking incomprehensible jibberish. He sometimes starts a sentence then stops in the middle, unable to remember what he was saying. We have an appointment with a pediatric neurologist in October -- the soonest appointment we could get. I'm very unhappy to have to wait for three months before getting some answers. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Any advice?

I'm so sorry for your worry. What comes to mind when I read the symptoms, and yes, I believe that they are neurological in nature... is pseudo bulbar affect. Look it up online and see if the symptoms jive to you. Best wishes, Dad.

Before considering a Neurological Disorder I would suspect medication side effects. Please get in touch with your son's prescribing Dr. about the symptoms your son is having and your concerns. I would hope your son's medication is being handled by a Psychiatrist.
