Waking Up with Tight Arm Muscles

I've been waking up in the morning arms bent at the elbow and my hands clenched into fists. The fists are bent in (pronated) as well. This would happen very rarely in the past but it's been happening with greater frequency. It happens nearly everyday now.

It seems to happen when the room is warm and-or my arms are under
the sheets in a room temperature of 70 degrees or higher.

I don't think it would be a problem except it aggravates an old golfer’s
elbow in my right arm. I’ve always had an essential tremor. And because of overtaxing my arms with computer work this week the hand shaking and the golfer's elbow is making it difficult to type with my right hand and use a mouse.

If anyone has an idea about what might be going on I would really appreciate it.

Re: Waking Up with Tight Arm Muscles

One of my sleep studies indicated that I might have REM behavior disorder.
I started using 3 mg of melatonin and I find that it helps. if I wake up early (4am) which is common I will take 1 mg of melatonin and that does help the effect last all night.

The disorder is more likely to be active after midnight as the proportion of REM sleep begins to increase. This can make it difficult to detect in split lab sleep studies where the second half of the night is the CPAP or BiPAP part of the study. Those machines can apparently help mask REM behavior disorder.

But I know at home even with the machine the disorder was acting up in the mornings.
