Negative EMG but ARm Still numb..!

    Hi

The fingers on my right arm have all been numb for 3 1/2 weeks straight. My shoulder hurts..My forearm gets numb and it hurts to type/write...my palm near my thumb is swollen. first doc thought it was carpal tunnel and gave me a splint which didnt help. Orthopedic surgeon had an EMG done which was negative. He didnt think it was Carpal tunnel cause all the fingers were affected. But its getting worse!! Its STILL numb and now my fingers HURT along with the numbness... If the EMG was negativem what could it be?? I have a follow up with the doc on Thursday... Anyone??

all of my tests have come back negative (two emg's, three mri's). i've been to two orthopedic surgeons, a neurologist, a rhuematologist, a gp.....nada! it's very frustrating but be persistent. don't let them tell you it's all in your mind. i have pain very similar to yours. concentrated mainly on one side and radiates from the middle of my shoulder down my arm into my fingers. i am currently seeing a chiro. who claims it's an injury from a fall i took a few years ago but seemed fine at the time. who knows if he knows really what it is but i need to have faith in something! try to limit your use of your arm and see how that feels. i love the weekends because it means i'm computer free for 48 hours which definitely aggrivates my condition.

    good luck!

I have small fiber neuropathy and all of my EMGs are normal. I don't have numbness but a feeling that my toes just don't feel the same (among other symptoms of course).

    Good luck!

I know how frustrating it is to not understand what's happening to your body. My symptoms are very different from yours, but I'm happy to share part of my story. There's always a chance it will help you...

Small fiber neuropathy does not show up on EMGs as the EMG only tests the large fibers. My diagnosis was made based on my symptoms and the fact that I had normal EMGs, X-rays and MRIs (nothing of brain yet, though). I experience a lot of burning (feeling like I've REALLY just been burned all over my feet) and a deep aching feeling on the soles of my feet with pressure (walking, standing, sitting with my feet pressed against the floor) that's disabling at times. My symptoms are equal in both feet and this turned out to be a really crucial symptom in figuring out what's happening with me. My neurologist wants me to have a special biopsy of the small fiber nerves this year to confirm the diagnosis.

Anti-inflamatory drugs like Aleeve don't do anything for me either. I'm on Neurontin and that helps some, but I think I'll end up on a higher dose. Ice packs have also been helpful for me for temporary pain relief, but I know a lot of people with nerve damage do not feel better with ice and it can even hurt. Did your doctor give you anything for the pain??? I'm wondering if you're just having pain in one arm.

    Good luck!

yes! my fingers kill me some days. it is usually located from the knuckle down then on the underside of my wrist up to my elbow and then my shoulder hurts. it was suggested by one doctor to be a side effect of a drug i had taken at some point (i pretty much took antibiotics since high school for acne, uti's, birth control pills etc.), it was also suggested to be from when i took a fall off of a porch a few years ago and landed on my right side (it's my right hand that hurts).

how long have to had your pain? are you just now trying to get diagnosed? i've been frustrated with the medical system long enough that i have taken a break from doctors. i am using massage therapy, accupunture and chiropractic care for the moment. the massage therapy actually helps alot (i go to a physical therapy place) and i go twice a week. it atleast helps me get through the day at work a little easier.

it sounds like yours is quick. my pain started a few years ago and was mild numbness. now, over time there is pain combined with numbness in my wrist and fingers. my shoulder is a painful pinch however.

    have you seen a neurologist?

Re: Negative EMG but ARm Still numb..!

I have not seen a neurologist. Only an orthopedic surgeon briefly who recommended an EMG, which was normal. I have a follow up with him on Thursday and am thinking he might want an MRI done or may refer me to a neurologist. My hand also suddenly gets really cold. Its weird. I dont really have other symptoms beyond the numb fingers and pain in arm and shoulder. I have some joint pain in my knee and ankle but nothing intense...

i've had 3 emg's and they were all negative. i would definitely make an appt. to see a neurologist and also possibly a rheumatologist if you have joint pain in other areas. your ortho. can probably recommend some one to you for both of those areas.

I would not have an EMG done by anyone but a neuroplogist as they are specialists in testing the nerves and nervous system...Also the EMG is only half of testing nerves as you also need to have the NCV (nerve conduction velocity) test performed by a neurologist also.....

I had both tests done yesterday.. despite all my pains, numbness, tingling, etc.. it showed no problems. I found out though that my mom (who has MS) also had nothing show up on her results, either.. so I think the issue is trying to have more (different) tests done.
