Is Lyrica a good replacement for Neurontin?

    Hi All,

I've been taking Neurontin for about 5 years now. I take it for chronic nerve pain (3600mg per day). It doesn't seem to be helping much any more. I don't know if I'm building up tolerance to it or if my underlying condition is just getting worse. My neurologist suggests that I switch to Lyrica, but my primary care doc says that Lyrica and Neurontin are chemically almost the same drug. I'm concerned about all the weight gain that everyone seems to get from Lyrica. I'd take my chance and switch over if I really thought it might help. Has anyone switched from Neurontin to Lyrica and noticed it helped alot more for their pain?

    Hi Steve63,

Yes, I was also on 3600 mg of neurotin for a couple of years. I was switched to Lyrica, and I have to say that it is better for me. The doc did put me on 150 mg. of lyrica, any less than that was not working as well. I am glad I made the switch.

As for weight gain I am not sure, I have put on a couple of pounds in the past 6 months but, I don't get the physical exercise I use too either and it is cold so I have not been out as much. So, I am hoping that once the weather gets better I will be more active and lose the few extra pounds I have gained.

    Take care,
    Marcy
