Small fiber neuropathy ?????

Hello all. I have been told that my problems "could be" small fiber neuropathy but not enough syudies have been done on this. In all my research it usually affects the limbs. All my problems are in the front torso and sides. My pain moves around and gets worse and worse with any activity. I also almost completely stopped having bowel movements and could barely walk due to pain in hips. I take 4800mg of Neurontin a day and my bowel movements came back,my gait and balance improved and my pain levels decreased somewhat. It still gets worse with any activity. If I lay on my side after a few minutes it feels like lying on a big kindergarten pencil jabbing into my ribs. Anyone out there have it in there torso. Most of the testing has been done on my arms and legs which I don't understand since the problem is in the torso. I have read that a ssimple skin biopsy can be done but the "super specialist" they eventually sent me to said that procedure hasn't been approved yet. I have been unable to do anything worthwhile in 4 years but denied disability again and again due to no test showing a diagnosis. I have undergone many test but they say they are all normal. The disability judge actually said I don't use pain medication yet I have been taking very high dosage of neurontin since Dec of 05. thanks in advance for any help.

Moparman, I don't know if I can help but, I have had pain in my flank and side for years. I don't have it all the time but made 4 trips to the emergency room over the years thinking I had kidney stones. they never found any but OMG, it hurts. You can't even breath. And yes, laying on my side I get the horrible jab in the ribs, the jabs are on the left side though, the crushing pain starts way down deep on my right side and makes me sweat bullets. I also burn and feel like I'm being electrocuted sometimes. I don't know what yours is from but I have been diagnosed with alot of neuropathies including in my guts. Don't give up, keep going to the doctors and keep telling them and telling them until somebody listens. Drugs like neurontin don't mask the pain like a narcotic. You have to cooperate with the docs and don't expect anything to happen very fast, they take everything one step at a time.

Moparman, Hello, was just reading through these posts and saw yours....guess we are all hopeful for answers and help. I did have a skin punch biopsy, and they usually do it in three spots on one leg. ankle, knee and hip. Mine was positive, but the strange thing is mine is more apparent (to me at least) in the upper torso. Mine isn't pain per say, but more burning sensations, and mine actually improves somewhat with activity. This is one bizarre condition. It seems no 2 people are alike, nor do any doctors agree on the treatment. It's very individual, and I say if you find something that helps you to function and be at peace..then go for it!
