My nerve damage doesn't show up on tests

Is it possible to have nerve damage but it not show up on an MRI and EMG nerve conduction study? I most definitely feel it 24 hours a day, but it doesnt' show up on testing.

Mine is from severe B12 deficiency.

An emg can only test the larger nerves, using a MRI usually only looks for spinal compression of the nerves coming out from the spine.

Evaluation testing is not complete unless a Nerve conduction test is done, also quanitive sensory testing or a skin punch biopsy is done to test the small fibre nerves.

Re: My nerve damage doesn't show up on tests

Hi speaksoftly - Many of us on this board have small fiber neuropathy (SFN), which doesn't show up on an EMG test or MRI. Because this is an uncommon type of neuropathy, many doctors overlook this possibility when EMG tests turn out negative. Aussie mentioned a skin punch biopsy, which many doctors use to test for small fiber neuropathy. Other doctors, like mine, say this test isn't approved by the American Neurological Association and don't use this test. In my case, my symptoms were so classically SFN, that my neurologist treats me for SFN based on the symptoms. Perhaps you can read up on SFN symptoms, and if they seem to apply to what you are experiencing, you will be prepared to discuss this possibility with your doctor. Good luck, Ruby
