Exclamation obesity and its odor

I work with a young man who is very heavy, about 500 pounds. He has an odor about him and his house that is very noticeable to others. We have talked about hygiene, daily showers and morning showers before work, but there are still complaints about him. I would like some honest and helpful suggestions to give him on how to eliminate his odor. He is unaware of the degree of scent that he emits, and I would like to be respectful in giving him ideas to try.

If he doesn't look dirty then it's probably not lack of bathing that is the issue. The odor is probably not the usual armpit/foot type of thing.

My guess is that he has rashes/skin infections between the roles of skin/fat. He may need to see a doctor ... keeping the areas dry is extremely difficult, especially during warm weather. Sometimes medicated powder helps. Sometimes it's yeast or fungus and otc ointments help .... but it's best to let a doctor decide the exact problem and the right solution.

thanks, that is what I suspect too...and I am trying to convince him to get past the embarassment of being questioned, and into action.

Re: obesity and its odor

I have to agree with that assumption...many folks of this size, never even look/lift up the rolls to see whats there. If he has a rash or sores, they could very well be infected and pustulus (emitting pus) which would definitely account for the odor. Not to be cras, but is is a kind of sickly sweet odor?

One big thing that he could do is, when he's in the shower to actually lift up the rolls and wash between then with soap and water, getting any trapped dirt, sweat, fungi and keeping sores/rash/infection away. I realize lots of time these folks get in the shower and don't want to look at things too closely, it can be hard, but he needs to make sure he's cleaning himself everywhere, mainly for the benefit of his own health.

Another thing I have a female relative that is grossly over weight. She has this type of body oder... She confided in me that due to her size she just can not reach some areas to give them a good washing..And when having a BM she can not wipe clean because she can not reach! I had never given that a though being normal size we do not realize what its like living in a large body

Re: obesity and its odor

We talked about washing under the folds and drying well afterwards but I don't think he was listening. He was stuck on being questioned about the odor, and not why he has the odor...and I am just trying to help. He is very sensitive but seems unwilling to try to deal with the source of the issue, just complained to others about my bringing it to his attention.

It could be that simple...clean and dry everywhere.
