    Effexor for OCD?

My doctor just prescribed Effexor for my OCD. I was on Zoloft before, and it didn't seem to help. Has anybody taken Effexor for OCD? Has it helped?

    Re: Effexor for OCD?

    Dear Mariabbb,

I used to be highly compulsive. It could have been labeled as a disorder, but back then there was not that psychological label. In my personal experience we need to separate personal choices from disease. Drugs can only make us numb out; drugs cannot control our choices or our behavior.

We need to understand why we are compulsive so that we can become aware of our choices and make different choices.

Compulsiveness means we do not take time to think things through. Choices produce results. When we don't like the results we get we need to make other choices. A numbing drug might help us slow down. But we have to choose to think things through.

I know people use the drugs to try to manage compulsiveness, and I have seen people numb out on drugs. But I have never seen anyone overcome their compulsions by taking numbing drugs.

I think to overcome compulsiveness requires counseling with a very good therapist. I don't think that any drug will help unless we get good counseling and we practice making better choices.
